To protect myself from such a public display of abject hopelessness and despair, for years I’ve been using hardened glass screen protectors to spare me a bout of humiliation. These, however, present their own problems and I’d love to do without them some time in the future. Step up Samsung, which has just unveiled an unbreakable OLED smartphone screen.

Traditional screens come with a glass covered window, attached to the display, which breaks when impacted. The Samsung flexible screen, however, comes with an unbreakable substrate attached to an overlay window, which is securely adhered to the flexible display. In a Samsung blog post, Hojung Kim, general manager of the Communication Team, Samsung Display Company, said:

“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass.”
