It was a relatively big deal: the campaign for Rep. Mia Love (R-Utah) acknowledged that it had not suitably obtained funds for a primary election.
But that didn’t keep the Provo Daily Herald from endorsing her.
The Federal Election Commission’s Danita Alberico said via email Oct. 17 that her colleague, Michael Dobi, was right when telling Love’s Matthew Sanderson “that Friends of Mia Love (the campaign) is not required to take any corrective action regarding the primary election contributions” raised before April 21, when the 2018 Utah Republican Party nominating convention took place.
But Friends of Mia Love told the FEC that “it will refund or redesignate less than half of what the government says was more than a million dollars improperly raised for a primary that was never expected to happen, according to documents reviewed by CNN,” CNN reported.
And the editorial from the Daily Herald endorsing Love was published before the FEC’s email, on Oct. 11.
Jordan Carroll is the executive editor of the Daily Herald, which made the endorsement in the race between Love and Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams for Utah’s 4th congressional district.
“I have no comment,” Carroll told steemit.
Daily Herald Executive Editor Jordan Carroll said she had no comment for her newspaper's endorsement of Rep. Mia Love, who acknowledged she unsuitably raised primary election money.
In its editorial, the Daily Herald wrote that “elections in the 4th District always seem to get a little muddied and ‘dirty’ between candidates, and this year is no different.”
Then it said: “We have no desire to jump into the political mire that (is its) campaign ads and claims.”
CNN articles are not campaign ads.

“The Daily Herald Editorial Board met with Love and McAdams to talk about the most pressing issues to Utah, and how they plan to represent them in the next two years, should they be elected,” the editorial says.
The editorial proceeds to offer opinions of Love and McAdams, arguing why Love is the better choice.
The Daily Herald is the third or fourth largest daily newspaper in Utah. And Daily Herald government reporter Katie England equated the Daily Herald with The Salt Lake Tribune, which won the Pulitzer Prize last year, and the Standard-Examiner, another daily newspaper representing a less homogenous area, in the tweet pinned to her Twitter account.
