He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

Pretending to be checking the lock, Sally opened and closed her locker door. She didn’t want her classmates to know Kaleb was late again. She was a patient person but too many times he made her feel the desperate lovesick fool.

Desperate to know Kaleb’s true feelings, Sally picked a daisy the previous evening. While plucking each petal she chanted,

“He loves me...he loves me not.”

Her mother had told her it was a game she played as a child and the outcome depended on the last petal.

“If you are chanting, he loves me not, on the last petal, than his love is false.”

Her thoughts raced,

“Where was Caleb?”
“Was he with another girl?”
“Was he still mad over their last argument when she accused him of smoking marijuana?”

She wore the pink cashmere sweater he liked. It hugged her breasts nicely.

Sally caught a glimpse of a blue shirt and long legs in tight jeans. Was that Kaleb down the hall, talking to the pretty blonde from the next classroom? Sally felt the tears stinging her pale cheeks and tried desperately to hold them back.

Suddenly he was by her side.

“What’s wrong, My Love?”

Sally wiped the tears away thinking of the last petal she plucked,

”He loves me!”
