Hey everyone
Today I have some great news that I want to share with everyone. I haven't done a post like this in a while but it feels really great to be able to do one now.
I recently passed 1000 followers on this great platform and it feels great!
Steemit has given me so much over the time I've been here and I feel like 2018 will be an awesome year for us Steemians. This year has already been great seeing the platform grow as much as it has and seeing all of the new users posting everyday.
A couple of posts ago I was talking about having a contest at some point and seeing that New Year's eve is right around the corner I thought it would be as good a time as ever to have one. I have been thinking about what kind of contest I should have for a while now and finally came up with something I thought could be some fun.
The Contest
The idea I had is that since it's so close to the new year I would love to hear some New Year's Eve stories from my followers. The contest will take place on this post in the comment section. If you choose to provide a picture with your story I think that will be even better since the winner will be chosen by the most upvoted comment by value. So some type of proof to the story is always appreciated. The deadline will be this New Year's Eve so everyone has a couple of days to think about their best stories.
The prize for this contest will be 10 SteemDollars for the number one most upvoted comment by value and then 10 Steem for the second most upvoted. The third most upvoted comment will be receiving a 100% vote on one recent post that they have made and that I like the most from their blog.

This is my story but it's a short one.
Every new year's eve I go to church to celebrate mass as we usher in the new year. The church is always filled to the brim, sometimes most people stay outside because the church is all filled up. Most of this people are those who haven't been attending mass since the beginning of the year. But with a new year coming they would want to change their ways.
The mass starts around 9pm Nigerian time, with processions and the Reverend enters to begin the mass. After the mass has been said and the time is exactly 12 am which ushers in the new year. We all begin to sing praises and shout at the top of our voice, thanking God for bringing us into a new year. Then the fireworks will begin, the fireworks is the most interesting part. Different sounds coming from different places and the beauty it creates when it's up in the sky, like a sparkling star. New year resolutions are made on new years eve, I write down all I want to start doing in the new year or what I will stop doing.
For the past few years that's how I celebrate my new years eve and it has been eventful so far. Looking forward to this year's celebration.

This is how I always celebrate my New Year eve.
It's no more fairy tales that 2017 is gradually taking a bow, and the New year eve is already on queue as usual. It's always an exhilarating moment tailored with so much fanfare.
I would have to draft my "Happy New Year" message earlier at noon, in preparation for the Dec. 31st midnight, and would send it exactly at 12:00 O'clock to friends and family members.
Before this moment, I must have bought some fireworks that will serve me for the night.
Of course, I have to attend the New Year eve Church service, which we call "Cross-Over Night." I normally go with my family to the Church that evening, to thank God for His mercies in the outgoing year, and commit the Next year into His Able Care.
With my fireworks well stocked in my big pockets, am always one of the first to open the floor for explosion, at the conclusion of "sharing the Grace" prayer. I have a way of escaping the watchful eyes of My Dad.
I normally disappear into the crowd with my friends during exchange of New year Pleasantries inside the church, we have our place of convergence, and from there we take off to the streets to enjoy the night. The streets are always beaming with lights, youths dance around burning tyres, some masquerade display too will be on.
At the exhaustion of our fireworks, we stroll back with immesurabe satisfaction that we have finally parted with the year, this is how I spend my New Year eve here in Nigeria.
It's always an awesome experience.

Here's my story, but it's a short one
Every 31st December reminds me of my most horrific experience.
It was on 31st December, 2012, I was travelling in a commercial bus from Makurdi to Orlu to celebrate the new year with my family. Just before getting to Asaba, along Benin-Onitcha express road, our vehicle collided (head-on collision) with a bike that was going the opposite way. Our driver who then lost focus mistakenly turned the steering towards a tree. It was after the collision that the vehicle stopped. Almost Everyone in the vehicle went into coma except I and a few others (maybe because I was sitting at the back). Not only was that accident tragic, what came after was horrific. Passersby took that advantage to steal from us- to steal from accident victims. I was awake, I was conscious but I couldn't move a muscle. Just in about 30 minutes, I passed out (became unconscious). I opened my eyes (came to) and found myself in the hospital. It was then I was told that the driver and two others (including the bike man) lost their lives.
I don't have any picture to add since it was 5years ago and there was nobody that took the picture.

I had a ghastly motor accident and God saved me. i was making a Journey to Shagamu from Ibadan a town in Nigeria.
I was traveling to see one of my uncles in Shagamu when the commercial vehicle had an accident.
The vehicle was on a high speed and ran into a parked Truck carrying logs of wood.
3 People lost their life but thank God I am here today.
May God almighty preserve all of us from accidents and sudden death.

Last New Years eve I left church during the cross-over service. It seemed there was so much I didn't achieve. I ended up running 🏃🏃 through the streets at 11:30pm just to glimpse a bit if sanity before returning to church.
I will probably wear running shoes this time.

Hope you get a lot of entries in your contest, man! I don't have any exciting new years stories to tell, the only one that even sticks out to me right now is when I got the Norovirus and got horribly ill on New Years Eve a few years ago, lol. I'd say maybe I'll post something from this New Years Eve, but I'll probably just be chilling out with my fiancee and being a bum since between asking her to marry me a few days ago and Christmas, we're both pretty strung out from doing so much running around and dealing with family.

Anyway, I have never really made a big deal and therefore I, unfortunately, don't really have any exciting story to share with you as such. Last year on New Years eve, however, was quite a special time to me as I was sitting in an airport in Guangzhou, China for 8 hours waiting for my flight to New Zealand where I went for work for 6 months. One of the greatest times of my life!
^This picture might not be much of a proof, but it was taken as I left my hometown before I had 48 hours of travel ahead of me!

News years eve for me is either about church camping trips, family sessions with dad or nothing. Pure unadulterated "nothing"😒😒
My new year's eve went toward nothing for that year.
It was January 31st and we were supposed to have been in church but we cried off. I must say that I have the most controversial wards ever but I still love them like that😍
So that 31st night, we were home, with no parents, all our friends, every single one of them was at camp. That was the era of no internet and my dad never really believed in phones. There was absolutely no light that whole day and in the night either. So everywhere was dark as sin. All phones were low on battery, there was no airtime to call anyone(they wouldn't even pick up because they were busy in church), besides there was hardly any network. All the torches and rechargeable lights had given up the ghost and to crown it all, we could not sleep. I and my sisters were restless and there wasn't even the joys of chop chop ie food to turn to that day. We prayed in the New Year and sang a few songs but virtually, It was a sad sad depression filled night. 😞😞😞 we ended up huddling together till the morning came.
I'd never wish that experience on my worst enemy.

So, this is my entry:
31st December 2015, me (front from the picture) and my friends decided to go to the mountain in our village. We planned to see and spend the new years eve from the top of the mountain. One of my friend ever climbed that mountain but he wasn't sure about his memory. There were no certain path in this mountain, it was completely jungle. When we're in the middle of the mountain or jungle, we got lost. My friend couldn't tell the exact path to reach the top. We were splitting to find the right path but we couldn't until finally we had to rest in the middle of jungle by the evening. 08.00 PM we tried to climb again with flashlight. I led the way, I was completely had no idea where we're going to. I just went up and up and straight because I thought of the top of the mountain so you just have to climb it. Unfortunately, before 12.00 o'clock we were stuck, because there was no way up, we were blocked by some big rocks. We gave up, the clock was ticking. Suddenly I heard an explosive sounds, I checked the time and it's 12.00, I knew it was fireworks. We just heard the sound of the fireworks but we couldn't see it, because so many trees were blocking our view. After that we slept until the morning. We decided to head home, I led the way so I just ran straight down because I thought if you want to go down the mountain so you just have to go down. Fortunately my friend saw a path, and it's making us easier to get off the mountain. Luckily we're survive, no animal attack, no rain. Although our plan didn't work out, we still glad that we were home safely. But I made a promise I will come back to that mountain again, and I did... The view was extraordinary although it's not on a new years eve.

My story! In 2001 I came up with a new new-years tradition. The idea was to give 3 personalized Kinder eggs to the most valuable new friends I made during the year, inside there was a wish for them that they could only open on the next new year. Then next year they had to each give 3 kinder egg to the 3 best new friends they made during the year and like that. I started the chain 2001 but then forgot about it..
then, years after I was backpacking in china, and I made a friend with whom I traveled for like 2 month. During new years eve, she tells me, hey last year someone tought me a cool tradition bla bla... guess what she gave me!!!! a fucking kinder egg!!

I've had A LOT of good NYE stories, hard to pick the best one. My favorite might be two years ago. Had no plans up to the last minute when a bunch of local NYC rave legends got together for a party. Except because they didn't make it happen until a few days left MAYBE 15 people showed up. But it didn't matter, since it was so dead everyone who was there, including a bunch of DJ's I grew up loving just hung out chilling all night. We left the party at 3am, napped for about 5 hours, and then showed up at an afterparty at 11am New Year's day. That one was still raging when we got there, champagne toast at noon, lots of people dancing in some outlandish costumes. We stayed at that one until it closed down at 6pm. It was a perfect New Year's experience with the girl I had started dating 3 months before. This year I think will top that year, and the girl I was dating back then and I are getting married in 2018. Hopefully should have an amazing start to what will probably be the best year of my life.

Since i travel because of my work most of the times i miss spending Christmas or New Year party home but last year and this one looks like i am a bit lucky. So last year i spend the New Year's Even home with my grandmother, my mother and my daughter and honest to be was the best time i had. My grandmother cooked and she is cooking amazing and we all spend great time talking and enjoying the evening. For me at least the best time is when i am home spending time with my family and it doesn't matter if its a normal day or the New Year's Eve!
Always time spend with my family is magic!

This is a story about an unforgettable New Year for my family. It happened when I was 11 year's old and New Year in the Philippines is often met with lots of fireworks, horn's tooting, speakers on full blast and other means to add cacophony to the noise.
One particular bad habit of Filipinos are firing weapons to add to the din of the noise. You'll hear it overcoming the clang of pots and the explosion of fireworks as you head bang, bang, bang of handguns and the rapid fire dhak, dhak, dhak of high powered rifles.
Shots fired in the air, not knowing where it will fall and whose lives will be forever changed by indiscriminate firing and irresponsible gun owner behaviour.
We are awakened to a scream emanating from my sister's room and we all rush to see what happened. We see here crying holding her foot. The smell of burnt flesh permeates in our nose and we expect the worse.
A hole in the ceiling confirmed our worst fear. A stray bullet fire by an irresponsible person has breached our roof and hit my sister.
My Pops nervously approached her and asked if there is a lot of blood. My sister wailing said that there was none but it really hurt and the area was hot. He looks to the bed to see the slug intact beside her foot, still smoldering.
I saw my Pops start to snicker and leave to get the first aid kit. I was amazed and saw though the whole thing funny because she was impervious to a bullet. We had already called her an Amazon before because of her strength but adding this feat she was downright a Wonderwoman.
A laugh escaped my mouth and she started screaming at me. I taunted her that she had such tough skin and I paid the price a few days later when she could run after me and bop me in the head.
Oh such is sibling love and concern haha.

Congrats with the milestone, @strawhat! This sounds like a very cool contest, and I'm looking forward to reading some of the entries. New Year's Eve can be a very nice evening with lots of cool stuff happening, but for me personally it's pretty dull. The reason is that one of my two dogs is extremely afraid of the fireworks, so I have to stay inside and soothe him while the mayhem is outside. It's been over 5 years since I last saw the fireworks, so I mostly just watch Netflix and try to calm him down during the event.

My favourite NYE was in 2010 when we went on a 3 week trip to Australia visiting Melbourne, Sydney and Tasmania.
We spent the early evening of NYE in North Sydney Olympic Swimming Pool.
Once it was dark we moved into Luna Park to see the fireworks from right underneath Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The motto for the following year, which was spelled out in fireworks on the bridge, was "Make Your Mark" which seems very apt for us Steemians in 2018!
This New Year's Eve is looking to be equally special. It's my birthday and it's one of those big '0' ones. My family have arranged a surprise which I know nothing about which starts today apparently! 😁
