Mineral Hunting - Start Online

in minerals •  7 years ago

The other day I made a post about my desire to learn more about Geology, and how I would like to further educate myself on the topic. I also mentioned there is a website you can go do to get more information on rocks/minerals that may be in your area. Given the multiple inquires I received, I decided to make another post to highlight this website.

The main website is USGS.GOV and I like to use the Mineral Resources Program on the USGS website: minerals.usgs.gov

Once there, you can go to the “Mineral Resources” -> “Online Spatial Data” -> “Interactive Map” to begin to search. If you further select in the legend “Minerals” and check the box for “Mineral Resources” and “Mine Features”, you can then find specifics on minerals and mines in the desired area.

One of the best parts is that you can get the GPS coordinates of the areas by clicking on the boxes. If you plug in the longitude and latitude, you can easily find the location (most smartphones already have this GPS feature available as well).

The website also contains mining and production facts – for example, many people think of Alaska as the biggest gold mining area in the US, but it is actually Nevada, and by a long shot. Through the first 11 months of 2017, there had been 845k ounces of gold mined in Alaska, but there had been 5.38M ounces of gold mined in Nevada during that same period. Crazy!

I wanted to share this resource for any fellow mineral hunters out there... happy hunting!

Brian

WOW That is crazy. I would assume it's because of the conditions of Alaska vs Nevada. Easier access in Nevada?

Nice pointer @brian.rrr! My partner Wren and I have enjoyed hunting semi precious stoned along our travels. We'll have to check this site out.

We live within 4 hours of some really quality Quartz veins, and went digging last year with great success. BIG clear crystals coming out of the Hot Sprongs AR area.

Nothing worth $ like if we were striking gold though.

That’s pretty cool and still a lot of fun to hunt down... hopefully you can get some and make some $$!

Wow that's good
I asumed that it's a mountains

I will see if it works for my country, I will look for the gold mines of Callao, thank you.

interesting application, I'm curious, I know what kind of minerals are given in my country, because it is an auspicious site of mineral excavation. I want to have that application

It's amazing what only an application can do! The technology nowadays is very useful! before we had to look in libraries and even lose hours and hours in books! Thanks for sharing this application, I would like to try it!

Well you like the geology brother, you know it's very nice to see people who like to search and always know more, visit my blog there something similar so do not give up and continue with geology, greetings brother.
@calitoo

thanks reallu usefull

At first I thought it was some war game or something, I see that it is not an application that helps us to know the minarales of a specific place or mine this is very supportive many we do not know that we can find in each place we are going be field, mountain or beach

I have never known this was possible but it seems very interesting! I will check this out! That's a lot of gold as well, I regularly see "gold Rush" but most of the time they seem quite desperate.

What good information you just gave us friend @brian.rrr, I really think an incredible website as we can know about the geography of many countries, states, cities, no doubt for lovers of this topic is going as ring To the finger the page, in addition it is precise because it can be had from our mobile phone. I did not imagine that there was an amazing website like this one, besides that I had no knowledge about what snow is the largest gold extraction area in the United States. Thanks for such valuable information friend, I learned something new thanks to you. regards

wow a very enjoyable and rewarding hunting experience for the crowd, thanks my friend

Hello, how are you going with Jacob's birthday preparations? Well, this application seems very interesting to me, maybe everything is more summarized than when we investigate on the internet. Besides, this application studies every certain mine?

Hello friend @brian.rrr this application you only get in the itunes store? I like stones and everything that we find in nature, I usually accumulate stones when I travel somewhere this application is very helpful

Do you know if there's a European database like this? For now I've mostly been looking for fossils, but minerals seem very interesting too. I'd definitely like to start with that as well.
