How I scored the nicest find

So many years ago I had a friend and together we would go rock hunting every chance we could get, and we would go often. This went on for years! It wasn't until many years later we both decided that we should put our efforts together and at the end of our trips, put all the finds together and then split them evenly. The very first time we did this, I remember we were at Kirk #3 Mine, in Gilsum, New Hampshire. We scored a nice find or nice bright green beryl. We had about ten crystals that were not really the greatest, but still definitely keepers. It was nearing darkness and I took a crack at a rock and this beautiful beryl fell right out into the dirt. I picked it up, wiped it off and it had a full 6 sides, well defined and bright green. What was really unusual about it was that it had a chocolate brown smaller beryl coming right out the top of the green crystal. I knew right at that moment, this was a rare and really awesome find for Gilsum. So looking at the crystal it was very dirty from falling into the muck, so i spit all over it and started wiping it down. My buddy looks at me and gets all grossed out and says "That's disgusting, you can keep that one" I thought, my god, if he knew what I was holding, he would be telling me to put it in the pile. Needless to say, I didn't argue with him. However at the end of our day when we were dividing things up, I let him have the nicer pieces to make it somewhat fair. He was happy, and I was happy. I felt a little bad about it, but the next weekend after he scored a solid yellow beryl crystal that looked like a piece of glass. It was the best thing I have seen come from that area in terms of yellow gem beryl. I told myself that someday i'll own that piece by trading him. the next month we went to the rock swap in Gilsum. He brought the gem with him and when I wasn't paying attention, he traded it for a very very junky piece of watermelon tourmaline. I almost cried. This was many years ago, and I have learned so many lessons. Happy rock hunting my friends.

Ha, I enjoyed this little story. While I am not a rock hound, I do have a few pieces that I have picked up over the years.

I metal detect instead. :D
