The Old Dog Discusses: Helping Planktons And Minnows on The Steem Blockchain

in minnows •  6 years ago  (edited)

In the last few days I've come across posts by long time Steemers wherein they discuss helping and retaining new members. This is a problem!

In this one by @steevc Ten K Minnows Project: Brainstorming he outlines the problem and refers to his interaction with the well know community builder and trouble shooter @pennsif

Both of these experienced members specifically mention the under utilization of contests by Steem block chain users. @pennsif made a partial list of contests here: SoS : Contests roundup @ 21 February 2019  [Spread the news & win GAME tokens]

A Killer DApp For Contests!

I maintain that we need a front end for contests. A landing page where those interested in contests and prizes can find all current contests in an easy to navigate and constantly updated format. This could be a huge new community for us! Could something along the lines of what SteemHunt is doing work well?

We could find a way to monetize the site and it could also attract outside advertisers, prize donators and new users!

To understand how popular internet contests are a google search shows many sites listing the various on line contests.

For example

Who Will Build It?

I'd love to see members like @starkerz and @anarcotech co-founders of  Oracle-D and the Steem Business Alliance get involved in such a project. Or what about @exyle and his merry band at @blockbrothers?

If someone wants research done or brainstorming ideas I'm a low tech businessman and serial entrepreneur with lots of ideas and I'm available for discussions.

If We Build It They Will Come! What Do You Think?

  • Do you see the potential of a contest DApp for the Steem blockchain?
  • Do you think that it would help sub minnows and minnows?
  • Would it help with user retention?
  • Could it attract outside advertisers?

Thanks for following me on my travels and I look forward to sharing my adventures with you.

Until next time,

I'm just a few days old on Steemit and it's a challenge as a newbie/plankton for sure. Limited RC etc. Sticking with it in the hope I learn more as i go...but not easy !

To be sure. Why not check out my latest contest?

Ok. Will take a look :)

This post has been included in the latest edition of SoS Daily News - a digest of all you need to know about the State of Steem.

Thanks a lot. Some good things are already coming from the comments in this thead!

How can I reach you?

Oh yes you know I am a big fan of your contests! I think it is an easy way for new people to get involved and for others to feel part of the community. A dApp of contests would be a great opportunity!

Check out this comment right from the horses mouth:

"Already planned to be part of Oracle-D's V2.0 platform coming out in 3-4 months from now."

It is indeed a good idea.

I was looking at it last week...

The whole area of games, gaming, contests, competitions could be a real front-runner for Steem.

I am launching The GAME Show on Thursday to pick up on this...

Life is a Game. Play it on Steem

You're a real go getter!

😃

I still remember "throwing a bone" for the best comment on your posts. I won that too. It feels great to win, especially when you are a newbie. You helped me a lot to be successful on steemit. You are great dear brother!

Thanks so much. I appreciate it!

As @steevc already knows, I'm a bit sceptical of competitions. When I first joined there was very few, there was stuff like @minnowbooster and a couple of Lottery type offerings as well as services offering to upvote you for a couple of dollars. I took a break from Steemit for around four or five months and having come back, or at least notched up my activity a couple of gears I've noticed how every other post or three in row is a competition of one sort or another offering you payouts in return for your hard earned dollars. I was that depressed I wrote a post about it.

Personally, I just think there are some elements praying on the desperate with all these 'Games' I prefer services like @shadowbot who just ask to use your voting power and who in turn use the groups voting power to upvote you. It's always a danger when money is involved, it does tend to bring out the sharks.

What someone says is far more important than how they say it!
Don't forget, you can upvote comments as well as posts!

I understand your thoughts but here I think we need to differentiate between upvote bots, gambling DApps and pure contests.

In a pure contest like the ones I run there is nothing required from the member entering apart from, for example submitting a photograph. In return they get an upvote for their comment, perhaps an upvote for an article that they've written about their submission, a chance for prize money (Steem) which is completely funded by me and a lot of fun!

It's a win win win situation! :)

Does that change your thinking at all?

Oh, I'm behind anything that doesn't require a payment (Dollars) to partake. I don't even have a problem with allowing control of ones voting as is the situation with @shadowbot I just dislike the ones that take $2.00 or SP from minnows who've probably only got $10 or 10 SP to start with.

What someone says is far more important than how they say it!

With the Steem system you should not need to pay to enter contests. Accumulated votes should add up to something good if enough people are interested. A vote costs you nothing really.

When the DAap comes, and it will, it will be huge!

Some have posted links to members that list some contests. That's a help to be sure but a one stop shop is the way to go in my humble opinion.

This comment was interesting and encouraging.

That's great. Things seem to be accelerating around here

Here is a semi teaser. This is our latest competition https://steemit.com/@dapplovers

Powerful!

A contest dapp would be cool. Maybe it could use some sort of referral scheme to pay for it. I'm seeing so many great new apps being built on Steem. I believe they are helping to grow the community, but we still need this effort as it's just not happening quickly enough.

Thanks for your support.

I'd love to see it happen and I'm amazed by your altruistic attitude here!

You've been pretty altruistic too. I'm just having fun with Steem. I'm not desperate for money, but I do like building communities and I want to see more people benefit from what Steem can do.

I think so too!

Already planned to be part of Oracle-D's V2.0 platform coming out in 3-4 months from now.

Very good news! Can we have a teaser post?

Hi @kus-knee

You might want to take a look at what @dosdudes are doing regarding contests. They haven't built a dapp but they are encouraging people with upvotes to list their contests for the daily round up post on the condition that there are genuine prizes offered and no upvote, resteem or follow required.

They are very keen to get good contests growing again.

Thanks I'll have a look.

I fully agree with you. Holding competitions on Steem is certainly a great potential. Competitions will be useful to everyone. With proper organization, competitions can become an indispensable multi-functional tool. One of the methods of motivation stays and attract other users After all, contests give a chance to get recognition of their true merit parties surrounding plus monetary remuneration.

The first one to take on the task in professional way will have a nice product!

My feelings on this is that to have a good interest in steem you need some holdings, you need to reach into your wallet and power up some SP - contests are a great way of joining in with fun things, but if a newbie is serious about steem then powering up is the best way to retain interest.

No doubt. I have invested a lot into Steem Power. Having said that for those in third world countries it becomes a lot more difficult.

Mostly what I've invested though is in having fun. If we have fun and help others the rest just seems to flow!

Nice idea!
I think with the bear market a lot of people just left the platform.
I got a lot less entries on my weird-mannequin contests, haha
The italian community was very active (about 300-500 users a year ago), now we have about 15-20 active users.
I think we can find the same numbers in the other communities.

A Dapp is a good idea ;-)

@contestkings is interesting too... a report listing contests.

Ciao ciao

Thanks for the info. I'll check and see if my contest is listed at @contestliskings

@ kus-knee Hello dear friend good day.
This issue is a big problem and part of the solution can be the contests without doubts, but I think we have to re-incentivize, to the people or healing team that have power of votes, to cure more the contents, the year that happened There was very little healing and this has not improved much. my humble opinion
I wish you an excellent week full of happiness and prosperity

Yes we need lots of healing!

a dApp would make our lives easier. If @starkerz comes to SteemCamp I think we can talk about it.

Interesting. Can u tell me more about Steem camp? Im on discord at starkerz#3898

Sure, sent you some info through. @shanibeer is your lady for this.

Ah, cool! Yes, I know Shani well! I’ll be there :)

Fantastic, I missed talking to you in Krakow.. will make up for it in April.

Great!

Great to see you getting connected here.

Good stuff!

What a great idea that is! Btw. are you familiar with @contestkings?

They have some specific guidelines for every contest that is taking place though such as: "Not to ask for upvotes, resteems or a follow" and they suppost such initiatives.

I wonder if they can be a part of this idea, or even if we could help them in some way to grow even more...maybe the solution is right before our eyes...@o07 any thoughts?

Thanks for the info.

A fantastic idea, even if you don't believe it, the contests attract a lot of attention mainly because of the prizes. But they also retain the interest of the participants to continue with the community and that expands until little by little attracting more users.

I agree!

My problem with contests is that most are in the art, photography, writing stories sections.. I don't like any of those tags tbh, and there are 0 contests in the tags that I use (finance, investing, economy, tech, blockchain, crypto), or at least I never saw one...

Maybe if we had these contests dapp more people would join and we could actually create different contests that aren't only about photos, art and wiring stories... and ofc, we would help minnows along the way which is always good for the long-term success of the blockchain!

I'd love to see you create a contest that caters to your interests and those of your target community. I'll gladly donate prize Steem and promote it as much as I can.

If I do I'll hit you up, it's a little hard now since most tags I use have diminished in writers and curators by a lot...

That's interesting. I am huge in contests here, and 90% of my posts on two blogs go to them. I win, win, win, since few enter most of them. So I get the post payout and also the sbi or whatever. I feel like this is a good bang for the buck.

And now that you mention it, in a year+ of using this strategy, I have almost never seen contests in those tags. The few I have seen are so complicated I would never enter. I throw a wide net and I know I would have seen the contests if they were here.

There might also be a bias in that the people who use those tags are not the type to enter contests even if they were offered. I'm only in crypto because of steem. When I read posts on those topics, my eyes glaze over. I do not think the people who write them think contests have value at all.

Yes and no, I've seen trading contests doing quite well on twitter ( 0.1btc to 1btc through trading, the last that got it gave the other 0.1btc), and I've also seen crypto contest posts on trybe.one where one would write about a certain crypto and the person that got the best post won 10k Trybe tokens or something like that.

But maybe you are right, even if I saw a contest I don't really know if I would join it or not... but the dapp does sound good :) Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it!

I would love to see the dapp. I already need it. I search a few hours a week in multiple places. Part of that time is looking in the feed for contest posts, which is a big pain.

I see "guess the price" contests sometimes, but I do not enter those. It's too much trouble to search all the other answers to pick some random number.

I sometimes use contestking to find some contests that don't require writing a whole post about it. In the end I think at these low prices it would be better to just decrease expenses, save some money and buy the STEEM myself + the sbi... Especially since I want to be here in the long run, having those sbi shares would compound really well over time...

EDIT: And SBI shares would make my posts have more exposure which in the long-run would be really good, I sure need the exposure, my posts normally are under huge amounts of posts that have bidbots voting on them...

Very interesting. When my sister retired she spent a year entering contests several hours a day and actually won 10's of thousands worth of prizes.

Her top one was a $10,00 travel voucher that she used on a trip for two to Europe!

It seems that you are on to something. A one stop shop for contests her on Steem will eventually come and it will be Big.

I agree. There have been some BIG ones here (that I did not win). But even the smaller ones pay off for me at least a few times a week. I'm posting and commenting anyway, so I might as well make it count.

I could do with a trip to Europe :)

Your experience is inspiring me! Have you written a testimonial about what you have done and a summary of your winnings?

It would be good if many eyes could see it!

No I haven't but I think I should. I write a lot of minnow tips posts with my strategies though and contests is in there. You can find the latest at the bottom of any of my posts.

But maybe you inspire me as well. I should do a new contest strategy posts to help others since I've really ramped it up lately. And especially since I am often one of few in there. I would gladly give up some winnings if more minnows can succeed here.

Hi.. Your idea must be great.. Good luck :)

We will see what the future brings.

@contestkings also promotes contests, and has a Discord channel.

It does help

The growth on Minnows and Plankton's are always on big Whales hand.

Posted using Partiko Android

True but there are are other avenues to explore as well.

Active minnows always explore all possible avenues ...and that are really helpful .
Like the dapps suggestion....let see how many would try it out

Posted using Partiko Android

I think that is a fantastic idea, one which could really take off and actually attract a whole new class of users let alone existing steemit users!

I'm convinced of it but we need a young whipper snapper to build it! :)

Blummmin heck, we could be in trouble this is the blockchain of the old Un's!! :0D

Indeed! We be the geriatric chain lol

Lol, nowadays it seems that way!

I may have run into this post late but like the thought process happening as I too have taken some time to thinking how to improve small accoubt engagement and retention. I may miss thr first part of today’s show but will make the effort to join when I can and hear the discussion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and provoking discussions!

Thanks for having a look

I don't think you can build one app for all the contests.
I have 2 things going on regular everyone and I need to do different things to take care of the contest separately.

It would just be a portal to direct them to the contest page. A directory of sorts.

I remembered @timcliff also tried to get a listing of sort long time back.
Not sure what became of that.

It looks like @oracle-d is working on something!

Good to know.

I think to have a front end/a Dapp for contests could help minnows. When I started here, I liked so much to partecipate to the contests, it was a nice way to earn some steems and to engage steemians too, but it was not simple to know about all the contests around. To have a "place" where we can find the infos about the different contests on steemit it could be great! ^_^

Correct answer!

That would be great if every week every dapps has a good content selection contest, so dapp users don't just use dapp on a daily basis, but are motivated to create good content and also have to promote the dapp used to post the Dapp Content.

For example, @tasteem has a weekly contest, but still vote every post that uses Tasteem.

I am waiting for the other contests so the Steem Blockchain still has "the spirit of competing for the better".

Or with regular weekly task, @oracle-d will be held to promote Steem to social media.

For the delegation contest, @nathanmars has invited many other Steemians to make Tweets about Steem and reward the SP delegation. (So far it has gone well, but more participants need to create the effect of greater public awareness of Steem.)

@theycallmedan also has a brilliant way to arouse the spirit of the Steemians. Every week, he will give the opportunity to Steemian through Steemit and Twitter, so that Steemian gives a posting link, and Dan will vote those content. The Steem Blockchain needs more support as Dan did.

Btw, thanks for you @kus-knee about routinely held contest. :)
