Weird Dog Breed: The Neapolitan Mastiff

The Neapolitan Mastiff is one of the largest, ancient dog breeds. They were developed as family and guard dogs in Southern Italy. The largest of them could weigh up to 120 pounds and stand more than two feet above the ground up to the shoulders. They mainly became famous by being featured in the movie Harry Potter.

Also, this breed almost became extinct during World War II but thanks to the efforts of an Italian painter who mixed them with an English Mastiff, they were able to survive.

The Neapolitan Mastiff is aggressive and can sometimes be very overprotective of their owner's families which they belong to. No need to worry though, he would do no harm against his master's new born child. They make good pets but need to be socialized from a very young age to reduce their aggressive trait.

These dogs have a scary appearance and a deep bark, both of which are usually more than enough to frighten people with bad intentions.

Neapolitan Mastiffs have several of what some might consider gross habits: slobbering, drooling, wheezing, grunting, snorting, and notorious for passing gas.

Wow !! Always wanted to have one of those, but really worry about my kids ... So got Labrador )))

Labrador is maybe safest large dog.

This is my dream dog. They are stunning!!

I absolutely love this breed! I saw online this one owner buy his puppy a collar to "grow into" and years later when he actually did - too cute!

Really stunning dogs, one of my favorites including the Tibetan Mastiff, just... Wow!

@darthnava
Wow! I've been never seen a dog so big! Truly amazing!

The video thumbnail is deceiving though.

Nevertheless, it's quite a dog!

Yes, it is!

What a beautiful big dog!!

Oh, what a dog !!!)

My sister had a female Mastif. It was the nicest, sweetest dog , and yet, when it barked at you, it still scared the whammy out of you. Deepest, throatiest bark around. Thanks for sharing a wonderful dog with us.

These are awesome dogs, I believe they are the same breed as a Cane Corso right? I have an Olde English Bulldogge, different than an Old English Bulldog. My dog, Bambam, is actually a mix between OEB, mastiff, American Bulldog and I believe a bit of Pitbull as well. Back in the 70's or 80's a guy wanted to make the bulldog what it used to be a healthy athletic dog more so than just a fat and cute but unhealthy dog. My dog does slobber a lot like the dogs featured in this article. My ceiling and walls are covered in spit from when my dog shakes his head after drinking water.
