Hey Steemian, Yeah YOU...Quit your Moaning about Post Payouts not being Fair !!!
When I first joined Steemit I saw Posts getting paid literally a $1,000+ sometimes for sub par Content.
Why and How Could this happen??
Well, it could be several things .....
- A Steemian who has been here long and gained a large Following and these Followers simply Upvote this Steemian's Content. Many times they will upvote all of his Content regardless of the actual quality.
- A Whale with deep pockets will many times Upvote himself which gives him a big boost. And other Whales will come to Upvote him for purley reciprocation . Sometimes ignoring whether the Content is quality or not.
- A newer Steemian comes to Steemit and brings an established Following from places like Youtube and Facebook. And they will start giving him a large quantity of Upvotes. They know him and his material. Examples would be someone like @jerrybanfield.
Is it Fair that Mediocre Content can be Rewarded so much more than Excellent Content?
Well, we all have seen the brand new Minnow who has honed his writing craft and is pumping out quality post after post. Only to be rewarded with pennies. And then we see an established Steemian put a simple Meme out and get $400.
Time to bitch and moan about this seemingly unfairness?? Well, first off all let me give you a cliched answer : Life is NOT always fair :)
Next let me just give a few real life examples that will make this clear why this is not necessarily unfair...
Ever see serial killer John Wayne Gacy's Self Portrait painting? ( The Clown). It fetched like close to $5K. Wasn't anything special. Nothing of high quality. But it was the Reputation of this madman scumbag that fetched this inflated high price for the painting. How many excellent artists around the Globe get pennies for works that are much, much better ?? A lot !!
When I go on Instagram and put out a high quality collage of my photography in nature that took me two days to do, I get a few accolades from a few people. When Chris Rock goes on Instagram and puts out a silly blurred photo of him eating a habanero pepper , it garnishes tens of thousands of Likes and Shares among fans.
Not fair ?? On some level you could argue maybe not. But reputation and building a Following can take a lot of time and hard work and that's exactly what you see on Steemit a lot.
Success at Steemit is Simply a Microcosom of World We Live in
Just sit and ponder that for a second. Many times in Life the most successful people are not the ones who are necessarily the best or most capable in a given area . But rather sometimes it is the ones who are able to Connect with others and build those strong relationships. Those people who really go out of their way to help and support those around them. They are enthusiastic and genuine about doing this and they are not always the most 'talented' of the bunch.. That's Steemit in a nutshell.
What You Need to Do at Steemit to Find Success
I am still a young Minnow here but I have learned a few important techniques to find some success through trial and error and through watching closely some of the more successful Steemains.
Of course no one can ever argue with putting out strong Content that engages and captivates people. But think more "Quality" than "Quantity".
From a personal standpoint, I concentrate on Commenting with useful and helpful Replies on other like minded Steemians' blogs. You need to add to the discussion on these blogs and don't make it self serving . I see a lot of Steemians who offer nothing for discussion but do have big spam Comments for Resteem services and things of that nature. Just don't do this.
Focus on making genuine Connections with other Steemains that have similar Likes and Interests as you. Remember, make personal and NOT business Connections. I have been going to Discord and Minnow Support Project to chat and meet new Steemans. It's a great resource started by @aggroed.
Bottom line : It's about building those long term relationships and people helping one another to reach their goals and dreams.Specifically, my routine has been first going to my "Replies" at my dashboard. This is a great feature at Steemit. It will give you the most recent "Replies" from other Steemians on your Comments and Blog Posts. And I will reply back to many of these. This is important because it allows you to stay engaged and current with your Audience.
Next ,I will go to my Feed and check out the people I Follow and their most recent blog post. And if I think I can contribute a Comment of value on their blog I will do so. Usually shoot for a half dozen or so Comments. Also, I will go to the #introduceyourself section of Steemit. I like to find new Steemians who seem to be interesting and like minded. I will leave a Comment on their blog and also Follow them. It is so important to interact with new Steemians, and I try to discover some new talent and encourage and support them. This is how we keep Steemit growing for the future.
Conclusion
Be sure to treat your experience at Steemit as a Marathon and NOT a Sprint. I have talked to many successful Steemians while also observing them. A common theme I kept hearing from them was this : Do NOT worry the first few months about getting Upvotes, Followers , and making money. It takes time and commitment as well as enthusiasm and passion. Just put your nose to the grindstone and learn to really embrace making new connections with other Steemians as well as supporting and encouraging them.
That other stuff ( Upvotes, money etc..) will eventually take care of itself.
End of Story !
Cheers,
Robert Andrew

I dig it. When I joined Steemit I posted jokes and quotes, short-form content that I could produce quickly and that I found meaningful. Then I discovered the many contests around Steemit, and then I started a contest of my own.
I don't really produce much now except the contest. It's more about giving back, giving others an opportunity to share their creativity, and giving me an opportunity (excuse?) to connect with people. And though I post less, those posts bring more SBD and SP.
I hear a lot of users talk about discord and minnow support, I'd do that and so many other things BUT I have a lot of non-Steemit commitments -- 2 kids, day job, side business, social life, etc -- so I only have so much time to give to this platform.

Well I applaud this post particularly the final two bullet points because it gives insight to the process and how we ought to think about engagement. There a method to the madness and clearly you have a grasp of this. I will surely take note of this advice and apply. Also your concluding paragraph gives me hope that I can be successful on Steemit if I keep going strong, thanks for this assurance @robertandrew.
