The Book of Acts of the Apostles recounts the events and actions that shaped the early church through the action of the divine providence after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus; and the spiritual mission of the apostles, guided and assisted by the holy spirit, finds a prominent place in this holy book.
The apostles had received in the celebration of Pentecost, like King Solomon in Gibeon, the spiritual gifts of wisdom, discernment, and understanding through tongues of fire that meant that baptism in salt and fire promised by Jesus: "Everyone will be salted with fire" Mark 9:49. This descent of the Holy Spirit was for the apostles the realization of their hope.
And these gifts had a meaning, to strengthen the apostles in the knowledge of God in the face of the prevailing oppression. Because in a world given over to sin, and especially greed, true spirituality is a reason for rejection.
This is how the Book of Acts after Pentecost relates the actions of the apostles:
"The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number" Acts 5:12-14.
This growth of the Church provoked the envy of the High Priest and his followers, relates the Book of Acts, and thus the persecution of the church began, the apostles were arrested and taken to prison.
But the apostles, strengthened in their mission, were freed by an angel, who confirmed them in their task, to spread the gospel for the salvation of humanity:
"But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. ´Go, stand in the temple courts,´ he said, ´and tell the people all about this new life.´
At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people." Acts 5:19-21.
