A 2-0 start to the season was just what the Edmonton Oilers were hoping for. This is a high-pressure season for the Oilers after yet another disappointing one last year. They made some moves in an attempt to bolster the veteran presence on the team, such as the acquisition of James Neal and goaltender Mike Smith.
It’s turned out well so far, with Smith winning each of his first two games and Neal scoring two goals in those contests. They’ll be on the road for the first time this season when they head to Long Island to take on the dangerous Islanders.
It’s a bit of a mystery who will take the net for both clubs on Tuesday. Mikko Koskinen is expected to have an equal shot at winning the starting job for the Oilers, but Smith has shown that he’s still a capable starter, so will head coach Dave Tippett go with the hot hand already and stick with Smith? For the Islanders, it’s more of the same from last season.
Robin Lehner left for the Blackhawks during the offseason, but New York picked up Semyon Varlamov to take his place. Varlamov is expected to share the crease with Thomas Greiss this year in hopes of recreating last year’s Jennings Trophy performance. It’ll be interesting to see how the goalie situations develop for both clubs, beginning with Tuesday’s game (7 PM ET).
NHL Odds: McDavid Looks to Continue Hot Start Versus Islanders
Connor McDavid has rebounded nicely after suffering a season-ending knee injury at the end of the season last year. He’s tallied two goals and three assists in two games, and appears to be as dominant as ever. As a result, the Oilers have won both of their first two games and will attempt to make it three in New York on Tuesday.
The Islanders are 1-1 so far, having won their most recent game against the Winnipeg Jets. Big things are expected out of the Barry Trotz-coached Islanders this season after the team finished second in the Metropolitan division last season. Tune in to catch all of the action beginning at 7 PM ET.
