MLB 2017 Home Run Derby - Review

in mlb •  7 years ago  (edited)

Guess what friends.. My pick to win it all (Giancarlo Stanton) was one home run shy from advancing to the final round. He had a chance to hit it too but he rushed it with 5 seconds left. I had him picked in multiple Steemit contests to meet against Aaron Judge in the finals and eventually win. After all, Stanton had home field advantage! Spoiler: By now we all know Aaron Judge is the new Home Run Derby King and has snatched Stanton's crown right in front of his hometown fans. With the Stanton trade rumours swirling around, this is the last thing he needs. I do feel pretty good that the other contender I had going to the finals actually ended up winning the whole thing. At least I got something right.

After accepting this loss, I'd like to move on to the second and more important point of this post. Aaron Judge is the real deal. You heard it here first. Well if you haven't heard yet chances are you're not an avid baseball follower. But learning who he is may make you look a lot smarter in future social settings. So please know that Judge has been putting up historical numbers as a rookie.

Here's Judge admiring one of his long bombs at the Derby.

His first half of the season looks like:

30 Home Runs
75 Runs
66 RBIs
6 Stolen Bases
.329 AVG

Now double everything and that's what he'll be ending his ROOKIE season with. Yes, I capitalized that on purpose because I screamed it. Roughly 60 home runs and he steals bases?! Are you kidding me? He has a giant frame standing tall at 6 feet 7 inches and weighing 282 pounds. Normally people of this size are not quick enough to steal bases but here you have it. The highlights I've been able to watch have him hitting home runs with an extremely high exit speed. Meaning he hits home runs that are basically line drives right from home plate. Just one thing I noticed making him very similar to one of my favourite players Giancarlo Stanton. Below is a picture of both of their stances. I'm interested to see if you guys see any other similarities.

If you haven't seen him bat yet, I'd suggest to check out some of his home runs below and "judge" for yourself. Sorry I know that was lame but I had to get it out.

Judge put on a show! I'm not a Yankees fan but you have to respect the numbers Judge is putting up.

Agreed! He is in a league of his own right now. No other rookie is even close to putting up similar numbers.

Neither are a lot of veterans, haha. I can only imagine the hype around Judge if he goes for 60 home runs and steals 15-20 bases this year.
