This upcoming Saturday brings the return of the Light Heavy Weight champion of the world, Daniel Cormier against the fast rising up-in comer Volkan Oezdemir.
I was a huge supporter of D.C. back when he was a replacement for the Strikeforce Gran-Pre, where DC (as a replacement) won the title and was more or less a swan song ending to the Strikeforce regime.
Now fast forward to the days where the UFC owns all ex-strikeforce fighters. DC is still very much on the roster but instead of fighting at 205+ (heavyweight) he decided to drop to 205 (light heavy weight) to avoid having to fight his training partner, Cain Velasquez. This is where things begin to get weird for DC in my opinion. He would now have to face arguably the P4P best fighter in the world Jon Jones, a fight that ended up being very lackluster and went to a decision.
The build up to their fights I will say was very entertaining. There were stage brawls and some funny phone/video interviews where they both went at each other verbally. Pro wrestlingesque or not, I was thoroughly entertained by their antics. But then the worst kept happening. Jones was involved in a heinous crime and should of lost all ability to fight for the UFC, however he didn't. He then came back to fight for his title that was stripped but then sequentially failed a drug test for performance enhancing steroids, the final nail in the coffin for Jones carrier and his title was once again stripped. DC was Light-heavy Weight Champ once again.
DC has always gone up against the odds and seemingly comes out victorious even through controversy (towel gate). Volkan on the other hand has just been a complete destroyer of worlds, decimating everything in his path, which sadly poured out into his real life since he is now in a domestic dispute ordeal he plead not guilty to (we will see..). That said I don't believe DC will survive Volkans hands.
DC will have his hands full, if he doesn't utilize his Olympic wrestling and control the ground game he may be in trouble standing. DC may have the belly advantage but his reach pales in comparison.
My prediction is Volkan TKO RND 2 however I have a strange feeling DC will wrestle his way to a decision.
