I replied to a comment on a post a week or two ago, saying that I will always upvote any comments which clearly demonstrate that the commenter has read my post. As I wrote my reply, I realised that I was actually offering jobs to people - read my stuff and write a comment in exchange for pay.
Right now, it's a nano-sized job guarantee because my upvote is far from being enough for a person to live on. But what would be enough?
Some Quick Calculations
I looked up how much my upvote would be worth if I had 100,000 SP and it'd be SBD 37.08. After curation, the other person would get SBD 13.905 plus some SP.
Assuming an exchange rate of US$6 per SBD, that would mean that they get USD 83.43 per upvote after curation. I'm going to assume that they just hold onto the SP and don't try to cash it in.
If they get one upvote per day, 7 days per week, they'd earn USD 584.01, which isn't too shabby!
That's just below the average salaries in Spain and Israel and well above those in Greece and Portugal before tax is even deducted! With 10 full upvotes per day, I could employ 10 people. If I were to decrease the value of the upvote, I could fully employ many times more in poorer countries.
I don't know what they'd get after paying taxes or what the fees would be for converting SBD into their local currency, but it could certainly give some breathing space to someone who's in dire straights.
I've been active on Steemit for around one and a half months and I'm hours away from reaching the 100 SP milestone. I just need to keep doing what I'm doing for another 125 years...
Additional Thoughts
What if These people weren't just commenting on my posts? What if they were doing something to help their communities? What if they were doing something to help their communities and our community?
I imagine that creating an innovative program to create full-time jobs using cryptocurrency is a story that would get picked up by at least one news agency.
I don't know if it's true, but I read that the average salary in Venezuela (after tax) is just over USD 33. Surely we can pull together to create at least one job for someone there?
My Request
Spread the word about this idea and let's see if it takes hold.
Your initiative is great and I look forward to keeping your word once you become a whale owning 100K SP.
I too wish to support more people like you towards your goal. I decided that I will upvote your posts earning you $0.33 at the moment. I'l continute to grow my STEEM so I can someday give rewards to people who make efforts to make a great article worth $30 when my SP becomes 100K too.

Whatever job creation can be achieved on this platform is dwarfed by what our government could achieve by the end of next week if they wanted to. Unemployment is created by government and it's going to get worse as inequality growth accelerates - I want to blog about the solutions to that.

This is a very interesting post and perspective on how Steemit does "employ" people just through commenting and how if they actively promote the platform, what a difference they could make in their community through this curation.
As you travel through Steemit you come across people who are doing just that, both physically and virtually in supporting their online community as we do in the STEEM engine and with the in-person meet ups.

I'm a bit wary of going to the meetups in case someone sees it as an opportunity to try and sell me some whacky cryptocurrency that's going to make me (i.e. them) rich.

By the time I reach that target, we'll probably have a moneyless society. Star Trek FTW!

Haha!! But gowth on Steemit can be exponential if you know what to share with the community with consistency XD

This is a really interested concept and thanks for working out all the maths!
I begrudge work and only wish I could stay at home and live off steemit - alas the day may come.
Yet it's a great way at the moment, to start earning to invest in crypto, or treats here and there.
For people who are creative steemit is a real opportunity to earn I find, where you can earn something from a non completed piece of work by posting stages and updates photos. Where as in the real world that would never happen.

Nice idea, if actualized it will go a long way in the alleviation of poverty in the developing countries.

If actualised, it might give me a platform to talk about how to completely end involuntary unemployment in countries that have control over their own currency.

Interesting you bring up Venezuela because I have seen some people on here from there that are making their living on here and others who have helped provide food down there using steem. So it is working, just finished reading a post where a person bought their lunch with steem in another country. Slow and steady wins the race is what they say, so hang in we are headed in the right direction.

so i will start with a question: do you know what voting power is? (there is not right and wrong answer to that) it's more like in order to tell you a bit more about the system
Also an advice would be just to upvote whatever you want. Because someone made you a ''good'' comment doesn't mean it's a guarantee upvote. In my case sometime i give 0.01$ upvote to every comment ( except the good post ones) others i just reply without giving nothing and in some cases where i like so much the comment or it is so to the point, or even made me rethink some things then a 0,06-0,10$ upvote and even more will come

Voting power is the reason why I said I could give a full upvote to 10 other people per day and more if I gave lower upvotes.

This is done voluntarily and I will NOT ask you for anything. However, should you VOLUNTARILY UPVOTE this comment ALL the rewards will be used to lease more SP so I can vote more people like you with HIGHER VOTING STRENGTH giving you even MORE REWARDS. Good Luck and may we all prosper here in STEEMIT.

This is the potential behind the platform. I believe that when the time comes round there will be an awful lot of people doing just this. Being able to pay people for there interest is a massive plus to Steemit.
I can't wait to see what how you progress in your journey!
