Pocket Starships, a real-time strategy space game, announced earlier this year that they would be accepting cryptocurrency as payment for in app purchases.
From their announcement:
SPYR’s CEO and President, James R. Thompson stated, “We at SPYR are always trying to provide our players with the content and options they desire. It has become clear to us that players want to be able to pay for in-game items using various forms of payment, and we have ensured our players that they are able to do that by integrating this ability to use Bitcoin through our payment platform. Our goal is to continue to grow Pocket Starships and our other games and adapt to the current environment and the acceptance of Bitcoin is just the first of many steps in that direction and we look forward to integrating other cryptocurrencies soon.”
And adding more currencies, they did. Less than two months later, users are able now to use their Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Monero, Ripple, and NEO to trade for weapon upgrades and ship customizations.
What about DigiByte?
Many people may not know this, but DigiByte, an older cryptocurrency that was created for use by games and other digital softwares, seems to be mostly ignored by the mass adoption craze of digital currencies. As stated by RoadtoRoota (a YouTuber and strong advocate for Litecoin), people are trying to find a digital currency to use as a means of exchange, not a store of value like Bitcoin. The big ones mentioned above are well known and established crypto brands, and since DigiByte has been in the background for three years, it may need some time before other games take a look at it.
I advocate though that DigiByte would be an excellent choice for indie game developers who wish to use a currency system in their game and be integrated with the blockchain. I´m not sure if they´ve released an API for developers to get in, though it would be a good call to!
Anyways, mobile games and crypto? Will the transition be seamless and risk-free, or will there be turbulence along the way?
