Xoom announces secure money transfers to mobile wallets in 11 countries in Africa

Xoom, PayPal’s money transfer service, announced that the company’s customers in the US, UK, Canada, and Europe can now send secure and convenient money transfers directly to mobile wallets in key markets across Africa with a focus on the underbanked segment.
This new service expands the company’s offering to send money to mobile wallets in Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe — with plans to include more markets in 2021.
Mobile money services are being deployed rapidly across emerging markets as a key tool to further the goal of financial inclusion.
Financial inclusion is instrumental in lifting the undeserved population out of poverty — and for driving economic growth. In 2019, the number of globally registered mobile money accounts surpassed the one billion mark.
In Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, over 60 percent of adults have mobile money accounts. This new service expands Xoom’s offerings in Africa as the current service already enables money transfers for cash pick-up, direct banks deposits and mobile reloads to 41 countries in Africa.
“Sending money to Africa through traditional channels has always been expensive. We wanted to help bring down the cost and speed up the process to boost financial inclusion,” said Julian King, Vice President and General Manager, Xoom. “There is nowhere else in the world that moves more money on mobile phones than Sub-Saharan Africa. While there are only five bank branches per 100,000 people as of 2019, there are 1.04 billion registered mobile money accounts in Sub-Saharan Africa .”

The cost of sending money through traditional channels to Africa is one of the most expensive in the world, with an average cost of 9.3 percent. The cost of sending $200 to the Sub-Saharan African region averaged 9 percent in 2018 and in the southern African subregion, the average cost was 18.7 percent, almost three times higher than the global average according to the World Bank.
Xoom is helping to bring down the cost significantly with average costs of sending money to mobile wallets in select African markets ranging from 2–4 percent of the transaction.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man is in custody after he allegedly stabbed his 2-year-old daughter.
WKRG-TV reports Mobile Police say 22-year-old Curtis Woods is accused of wounding the girl Monday night at an apartment complex.
Neighbors told investigators they heard the victim’s mother screaming “no” and trying to get out of the apartment. The television station says the woman was ultimately able to get out and call for help.
Woods is being held in the Mobile Metro Jail on a charge of attempted murder.
It was unknown if he is represented by an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
The child was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Her condition was not immediately available.
Police have not said what sparked the incident, which remains under investigation.

Osceola County plans for mass COVID-19 vaccination sites, drive-up locations
Heritage Park to serve as primary distribution site
OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — As the Federal Drug Administration edges closer to approving a COVID-19 vaccine, Osceola County leaders are ironing out the final details in its mass distribution plans.
Osceola County’s Emergency Management Director, Bill Litton, said Heritage Park will actually serve as their primary site for mass vaccine distribution, once it’s available for the general population.

Litton said the county is also looking at coronavirus testing sites that it has been using when it comes to distributing the vaccine.
In talking about the Heritage Park testing site, Litton said it provides a lot of area that would allow them to potentially have up to six lanes of vaccine administration.
He said churches and even community centers are being considered and added the county and Florida Department of Health purchased mobile trailers that would allow them to do pop-up sites around the county.
In terms of a timeframe, Litton said they are probably looking at February or March for them to start vaccinating the general population.
Another key part of the planning will be how to store or keep the vaccine.
“I think initially when the news came out, it felt like you had to have it straight from -70 to you, and that’s not the case,” said Dr. Latha Ganti, an emergency medicine physician with Envision Healthcare.
Ganti said storing the vaccine may be less stressful than it sounds.
“Once you bring it to refrigeration, you can keep it for five days, so that’s not terrible; and then once you have taken an aliquot of the vaccine, like take one of the vials out of the fridge and then you’re diluting it into multiple doses, you have six hours,” Ganti said.
As storing the vaccine seems to be less of a hassle than initially though, Litton tells says for planned mobile sites and drive-up vaccination sites, county leaders are looking at having refrigerators on location.
He also added they can recharge the vaccine shipments with dry ice every five days, for up to a maximum of 15 days.
More Power fully energizes its 10MVA mobile substation in Iloilo
Iloilo City electric provider More Electric and Power Corp. (More Power) on Sunday fully energized its 10MVA mobile substation at Iloilo Business Park in Megaworld, Mandurriao.
According to tycoon Enrique Razon Jr., chairman and president of More Power, the energization of the mobile substation will contribute to the improvement of the city’s power sector.
“The 10MVA mobile substation is not only a behemoth power-provider on wheels, it is also the answer to the ever-present danger of overloading of the Mandurriao substation,” he said during the event.
In October, the power firm received backlash from electric consumers after the scheduled brownout — supposedly only from 4 a.m. to 5 p.m. — lasted 13 hours.
According to More Power, the scheduled brownout was part of its preventive maintenance on all its five substations. The firm clarified that it had warned of the Mandurriao substation working at critical levels reaching up to 90 to 95 percent.
The firm said that the recently energized mobile substation would prevent overloading in the Mandurriao substation. It is also expected to reduce the substation’s performance at a safer 70 percent capacity.
“The mobile substation will increase the capacity of the Megaworld area — one of Iloilo’s fastest-growing areas — by 6–8 megawatts. Moreover, it will decongest the Mandurriao substation, whose usage has gone beyond safe levels, and will result in fewer outages,” Razon said.
He also noted that the powering of the mobile station is the firm’s “first major step towards doubling Iloilo City’s power capacity within the next five years.”
Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi meanwhile lauded the inauguration of the mobile station. He also assured that the Department of Energy (DOE) will cooperate with the firm in improving the energy distribution in the city.
“We aspire that the inauguration of your new mobile substation serves as another opportunity to calibrate your strategies towards a better served Iloilo City. Rest assured that DOE is always your partner in the energy distribution development. You can always count on our support in your future endeavors,” said Cusi.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas added that the 10MVA substation will also serve as “breathing space” for both Mandurriao and Molo substations.
“We are grateful for MORE Power’s dedication to provide the best quality of service for the Ilonggos. Let us continue to be more understanding, and soon, Iloilo City will have the best supply of electricity for all,” he said.
