Join a professional society or an online fan site. Be elected President, appointed a Mod, or stay a near faceless member, doesn't matter.
At some point there are going to be 'attackers'. Whether they proscribe to the mentality;
"Anything you say, my answer is NO,"
or attack your decisions,
"Why did you ban Viola?",
you, if you have a fully operational brain, must ask;
"Why am I subjecting myself to this?"
You have nothing to 'get'.
This isn't a job with a pay cheque, this isn't a debate where there is winning and losing, points and pride. This is a casual leisure activity. So why do you need the stress?
Every organisation has it's 'Scorn'. This is a clandestine appointment. Someone is going to occupy the position of being the anti to the pro. If you like that kind of attention, if you want to be the Scorn, fine. But if you are reasonably normal, you pull back, you walk out.
And you don't come back.
Many sites have a 'moderator'. Maybe they are supposed to read the items before they are published, maybe they can remove a user who posts porn or other unpleasant off topic stuff.
As long as they aren't harassed, they continue. Continue in this free time burning occupation.
Of course, there are always the worst users who launch an attack on the Mod, thinking that they'll 'win'.
In some cases, the site owner steps in, bans them, locks them out, and it happens so quickly, the Mod might not even know about it. In others, the Mod is confronted, and quits.
The only shock is when other people, maybe the owner, maybe other users, show shock and dismay, and ask the Mod to return.
Return for what?
