The new GUI wallet is still in Beta and there are people having various issues with various operating systems so I wouldn't recommend putting a ton of coins in there until this has been tested for several months. The positive is that after a long wait it is finally here which is a huge step forward. If you guys have been following my blog you will know that I dedicated my entire GPU mining farm which was 24 GPUs total to mine monero in 2014. Here is a blog post I did several months ago about it.
As you can see in the blog post I wasn't able to hold onto my position and had to sell my Monero at $0.50-$0.55. This wasn't that I didn't believe in the project it was simply because I needed the money. I'm still very bullish on the coin even though I don't have a position other than some coin dust. It could run up now that this wallet is out and there was also a picture posted on Reddit of XMR in the Jaxx wallet. So that is just around the corner as well.
So let's get into it. Here was my experience getting the new Monero GUI wallet to run. Possibly there are others in the community that can help me with some of the errors that I did get. First I tried to run it in OpenSuSE LEAP 42.1. I got the following error. "./start-gui.sh app startd ./start-gui.sh: line 5: 3889 Segmentation fault ./monero-wallet-gui"
I then ran ./monero-wallet-gui to see what it would say. I got another error. Here is the screenshot.
I tried a ton of different things to resolve the issue but ultimately couldn't. I went over to my laptop which has OpenSuSE 12.3 on it. An older version but thought I might as well give it a shot. I ended up getting a different error over there. I wasn't able to resolve it either but I did see on Reddit that someone was having a similar error in an older version of Ubuntu.
I don't have Windows or any other opperating systems installed on any other machines currently but I figured I would try one last thing. I decided to try to run the Windows 64 Bit Binaries in Wine. If you aren't familiar with Wine it is a Windows Emulator which allows me to run Windows programs in Linux. It is pretty awesome! It ended up starting up!
So the first window you get to gives you three options. I was creating a new wallet so I selected that feature.
The next screen let's you name your wallet and also gives you the 25 word mnemonic seed. Keep this safe!
On the next screen you will set up your wallet password. This is tough! It has to be VERY complex. You can't even go to the next screen unless your password is Fort Knox status! I'm not going to say exactly how long my password is but let's say it is just slightly shorter than this blog post. Hint: You can add spaces in to get your complexity up.
Once that is done it will show you your backup seed again.
I got an error that the Daemon wasn't running. I couldn't get it to run and even tried to manually start monerod.exe.
I decided at that point to connect to a remote node. I connected to node.moneroworld.com. You can do that on the settings tab.
You will see the blocks syncing in the bottom left corner.
I went ahead and sent a little bit of coin dust over to the wallet from Poloniex to test it out. One thing to mention is that if you are sending from there you don't have to put in a Payment ID. That is only for if you are sending to another service that requires it like another exchange.
The transaction showed up as expected!
After that showed up I wanted to close out and make sure I could successfully open the wallet back up and see the balance. When I did that it requires the wallet password. Better secure than sorry!
Final Thoughts
Props to the developers who have been working on the Monero project. It honestly is what Bitcoin was intended to be. This tech could have been Satoshi's second project. We really don't know. All I know is the technology is complex and there aren't that many people in the world who have the skills to work on a project this sophiticated. The wallet coming out and XMR integration into the Jaxx wallet which looks to be just around the corner are huge advancements with this project. I wouldn't be surprised if we see new money comming into Monero as the kinks get worked out of this GUI wallet.
I hope you liked this post and found it helpful. Please upvote and if you are have some Monero dust to spare I would gladly accept it as a Christmas gift!

Cool. Haven't tested myself yet. I'm assuming once this gets ironed out we will have other cryptonote GUI wallets too.

Yeah you are probably right because they will be able to look at the code from this wallet potentially and base things off of it. There is a lot of things to iron out with this wallet from what I was seeing in the Reddit post. People with different versions of windows and different distributions of Linux were having issue as well as some people on Mac OS X. In the end I think things will be figured out and that will open the door for a less technical user base to get involved. Also that will help from people feeling like they have to store their coins on exchanges.

I just learn that you have to run full node to use Monero, that seems crazy!

You can do a MyMonero Wallet and not have to run a full node. https://mymonero.com
Also I don't know if the Jaxx wallet finally got Monero added in there or not.
