Retiring is pointless unless you know this about yourself [Personal Finance Lesson 13]

in money •  7 years ago

I don't believe in retirement. To me, retiring means two different things. One of them means to be able to have time to do other things that you enjoy (the other is something we'll talk about in some future lesson). That kind of implies that up until then, you never had the ability to do the things that you actually wanted.

Which brings up a much more important question than how to retire early. Even if you had all the time and money in the world, do you know what you want to have and to experience in life?

Homework:

  • Do the exercise in this video:
  • What is the thing that you have written down that does not cost too much time (can be done within a week) and too much money?
  • When do you think you can take what you have learned up till now to make that happen?

Very good reminder. We should always reflect on what our most important goals or passions are, and then see if there are ways to start them now rather than put them off at retirement. Who knows? You might not even have a good enough health to enjoy them then as much as you have now when you're young. Or maybe you'll be tied down by too many people who depend on you by then (a partner, kids, parents you need to take care of, etc) Better to start now than to leave it up to the uncertain future. :)
