There is so much knowledge is this man's head that I might even have to split this into 2 separate posts but let me share the first of several insights that I've learned through Derek.

It's About What You Do

Life is not about what you know or how much you know about something. It always comes down to what you are actually able to execute. What you DO is more important that what or even who you know!

Say Yes (in the Beginning)

When you first start out your career you are NOT I repeat NOT in the position to be picky and turn things down. You never know what can come from saying yes. It could lead you to places beyond your wildest dreams. Do not think that you are the next greatest prodigy because you will miss out on so much opportunity.

Standard Path is For the Chumps

This one took me some time to digest but it is a very good tip for those who believe in pushing against norms in society. To best describe this principle I will use a real life example that comes to mind; let's say that you started a job at a business and they told you normally it will take you 14 years to become a partner here. Most people will put in the time and effort and expect after 14 years to be promoted because "that's what happens". But this is simply what people think and is not the only path.

What Derek believes (which I do too), is that if you want to become partner just do more. Rise up quicker by taking on more responsibility and do the work of people above you in your spare time. If you take the standard path you will arrive in the standard time, if you take the advanced path you will arrive in advance.
