Fake Silver Alert!!!

in money •  7 years ago

Buying gold and silver is a regular thing for me. I test my silver and buy from only reputable dealers. In the past of all my orders I have gotten 7 fake silver bars. today I just received another fake bar. This is not the dealers fault but certain countries and manufacturers put in copper fillers in bars to get the weight to a certain ounce. When buying gold or silver bullion please always test it, and buy from dealers that have a return policy.Screenshot_2017-07-11-17-29-22.png

The smaller bar that is in the plastic is the fake silver bar. My tester that I have shows when I opened it to has different metal in the middle of it and they put silver all around it. the bar is slightly thinker but all measurements put together, the L x W x H and when you get the volume its impossible for the silver to be near its 10 oz silver weight. My scanner says its a copper filling. Now i am not saying that APMEX sold me a fake bar on purpose but a bad bar fell through their cracks and they have an awesome and fast return policy.

I returned the bar and got another a few days later and that one was real. Remember when you buy bullion please check the dimensions and weight to see if you got any fake silver.

thank you for reading and have a wonderful day.

How did you test it? Acid assay? Specific gravity? By "scanner," what do you mean? This thing?

I have an ultra sonic thickness gauge

if you measure the entire silver bar and get the volume that measurement if you get it in its weight doesn't come up to 10 oz. The bar weighs 10 oz, so it shows even on that level it is filled with a different metal.

When you bought it, was it listed as new or generic? Sometimes Apmex has specials on "generic" bars which they accumulate in the secondary market.

This whole issue is troubling. I have purchased a good deal of silver and gold bullion from Apmex. If they sold you something listed as "new," it is deeply problematic that it is fake. I can give them a little bit of a break if it was sourced from the secondary market and listed as a "generic" 10 ounce bar.

A little background: I have a relative with a jewelry store that was very successful in the "cash for gold" business and have been taking gold and silver bullion to NTR for years. In addition, I sold a good deal of bullion that I owned to NTR. All in all, I have taken thousands of ounces of silver bullion in all increments to NTR. Much of it was from Apmex.

I have never seen what you encountered. I don't doubt it is possible. I once encountered a Walking Liberty half-dollar that weighed 8 grams and was fake. I also have a war nickel that is magnetic. I have seen fake Carson City silver dollars, and Ebay is littered with fakes.

Man, if you didn't put the 2 together, you really wouldn't even know that it was fake by just looking at it. But when you put the real one next to it, you can see the differences. Thank you for sharing this, very important to watch out for that.
Thanks
