Investor George Soros made the largest currency trade in history, after he shorted (sold) the Pound Sterling in the 1990's during 'Black Wednesday'.

He allegedly pocketed over $1 billion from this single bet against the British currency. This was the day that speculators were said to have 'broken' the Pound, by forcing the British government to withdraw from the Exchange Rate Mechanism - a system which was (ironically) designed to promote monetary stability in Europe
