I have tried just about every promising website that offers money. And a few not so promising ones. In the beginning of my hunt for money I was on sites like cashcrate and inboxdollars. (got one check from cashcrate recently after years of not using it!? Must have some referrals) But after a few years I have started making my living with just a handful websites.
Mturk
Amazon's mechanical turk has made me almost $7,000 in the past few years with sporadic use. I posted a tutorial on mturk recently. Mturk consists of everything from data entry, to college research studies. You get paid per "hit" and with some studying you can make some real extra income through mturk.
User Testing
I have made over $3,000 with usertesting over the past year and a half. I don't keep the site up as often as I should honestly. They pay really well. $10 for a computer test that takes 15-20 minutes and $15 for the mobile tests. They also have "peek" tests that take 5 minutes and are $3. You simply need a decent headset. They record you while using a website and answering questions.
logged on to check my pay and there's a $10 test for me. :)
Etsy
If you have any sort of craft, etsy is a great way to make extra money. I have only been selling on etsy for about 4 months and have made almost $700. Most of this was recent, as I have been building up my product list and receiving reviews and learning how to use the site. This is going to be one of my main sources for earning money at this point. I have a lot of things I am crafting from journals, to custom art on shoes. You can also sell digital designs on etsy if you do any sort of design work.
Createspace
I published my first coloring book a little over a month ago and am working on my second. In 6 weeks my first book has already earned me $250. My plan is to release a lot more books so that my monthly revenue will increase and I will make a decent residual income off my coloring books.
PerkTV
This I used when I had smartphones. I had a "phone farm"where 5 phones (really 4 and one tablet) ran the app and you get paid in points that can be redeemed for amazon gift cards. I was making about $150 a month in amazon gift cards which I used to buy necessities that I would have otherwise bought, thus freeing up real cash. I am getting a phone soon and want to check out if it's still as potentially lucrative.
Steemit
Haha. Steemit has recently made the cut but you all know how steemit works, most of you more than me. :) In addition to those sites...
I also market my art using social media and get commissions that way. I use groups on facebook. I am now starting to use tumblr to promote my art and when my phone arrives I will use instagram. In the past few months I have made a few hundred dollars off of commissions from using these avenues.
I have also started a cafepress and put all my art on stuff there. I have only made one sale. I also am now trying redbubble. And I am looking into if I can make real money with fivver. I know a few people definitely make good money there. As I said, I am always on the look-out for new ways to make an extra buck. :)
I am always on the look-out for other ways to increase my income without having to work a traditional job. Let me know if you have any suggestions. I value being able to earn money while maintaining my freedom to work on art and enjoy myself.
I am not by any means well-off but I am steadily starting to make real money from combining all of this. It took me a few years of dicking around online and learning the ins and outs to start making real money but at this point, my income just keeps increasing. So, maybe this can help someone at the very bottom be less at the bottom. I am like the second rung of a 10 rung ladder now and the third one is sooooo close. XD
Thanks. i'm planning my retirement in a few years and this list should come in handy.

I hope it helps. Do you have any craft? I am loving etsy and plan to invest more into that business. :) Good luck with your retirement. ^_^

Mturk was too much work to be worth it in the beginning but now I can make an easy $10 - $15 a day with it with minimal effort. But definitely was a TON of work put into it in a time when I had nothing better to do. :)

I am valuing my time more which is why now I am focusing mainly on coloring books to get residual income. My goal is to have 20 or 30 out.

It's great making one's living online!
Since I started, I am working more and harder than ever in my life.
But I am as free as never before and it's not only the money but learning every day something new in different fields!

Exactly! I have so much fun learning and moving from one thing to the next. Never get stuck or bored. I was in a call center for 4 years and I think it made me snap and no longer be able to take going to a job every single day to do the same thing over and over.

It really does. I used to work on art, knit hats, learn things form wikipedia (only site that worked), and do calls with perfect evaluations. I think thats why I earn decent money on mturk when many people don't.
