Universal Basic Income: Swift Demand

The Problem

The future that lies ahead is becoming progressively more automated as time goes on. Companies like McDonald’s and Tesco cut thousands of jobs to implement self service checkouts and in the not too distant future, it is highly plausible that many other industries will be effected in a similar manner.

Due to our unprecedented technological advances, several job types will be a thing of the past. Goldman Sachs has anticipated that the driving industry alone could lose 300,000 jobs a year to automation, with several automated driving tests already under-way in 2018.

This news makes me proud to be a part of the human race. The sheer amount of knowledge that we now have as a society to help efficiencies within the workplace amongst other things is something to be admired. I am all for technological advancement and I believe it is within our best interests to embrace it with open arms; this is the future.

That being said, the increased automation within the work environment will lead to a huge societal problem, with serious socio-economic implications if it is not taken extremely seriously. The vast reduction of jobs humans will be required to do, will lead to exponential rises in rates of unemployment and a larger divide between rich and poor.

It is our duty, as a forward thinking society, to think about the real issues that we will ultimately face in the future, and put together an action plan to ensure the future is a better place for all.

Universal Basic Income

Universal Basic Income is a form of social security or welfare regime in which all citizens receive a regular and unconditional sum of money from the government. This ideological view has been backed by key figures such as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Stephen Hawking and Bernie Sanders as something that is necessary to combat the real issues of future automation and wealth distribution.

The Universal Basic Income promotes freedom for all, the ability to work if you so desire to earn extra money for yourself and your family, but also the option to not do so if you don’t want to. A study in the 1970’s found a negligible difference in work effort when a basic income was introduced, and a study in Namibia actually found increased levels of economic activity, particularly through the launch of new businesses.

Universal Basic Income, in many ways, helps bridge the ever growing gap between rich and poor, whilst also still providing sufficient financial incentive for people to find work if they wish to. The current system in place in the UK is often counter-intuitive to personal economic growth. With the adoption of oppressive tax brackets and benefits being cut and/or reduced the more hours you work, it is often financially unwise to work longer hours. With the introduction of a Universal Basic Income, this is not the case. Your income entitlement will be given to you, regardless of what you may earn on top of that, ensuring justifiable incentive for the majority to pursue work.

Due to all of the reasons above, I believe a Universal Basic Income is paramount to the success of society in the future, and it is something that I am strongly in favour of.

The Solution

Swift Demand is one of the first applicable projects in regards to Universal Basic Income and will be based upon a cryptocurrency blockchain. Whilst creating such a huge project is no easy feat, this “experiment” hopes to provide a Universal Basic Income through its Swift Token system.

100 Swift Tokens are “air-dropped” per day into a verified account, everyday. This number will remain 100, but will eventually decrease based upon living wage estimates and the value of the coin etc.

Currently the project is in it’s very early stages and is yet to convert to a legitimate blockchain yet, nor is it on an exchange of any kind. But that being said, I firmly believe in the ideology behind the coin and therefore hope it achieves the success it deserves.

580 trades have been made with Swift Tokens within the last 24 hours and almost 13,000,000 tokens have been traded since the inception of the project. It is totally free to sign up and you can start receiving your 100 tokens per day right now! It took me around 5 minutes to sign up, with just a simple verification process to ensure only one account per user.

Although still in it’s extremely early stages, I see the potential in this ecosystem and there’s nothing to lose by signing up and giving it a go. Some business start-ups are utilizing this opportunity to advertise work on the Swift Marketplace in exchange for tokens. You can even buy a cryptocurrency t-shirt for 6,000 tokens!

Swift Tokens may be of little value now, but in the future, if their vision is successful, they could be worth a lot more. If you support the ideology behind a Universal Basic Income I’d encourage you to sign up and give it a go. I’ll leave a link down below, any other questions and I can try my best to answer them.

Well you convinced me, you deserve the referral. This idea would be an incredible one if it works out.

Thanks mate!

Yeah I agree, I have no idea whether it'll come of anything but I hope so.

I think a Universal Basic Income is something that is certainly needed in the future, whether Swift Tokens will manage to successfully implement one we shall have to wait and see :)

Agreed. I think the usage of smart contracts might at some point allow individuals to put into a pot and then others in need would be able to take some out. Even a little fairer distribution would be incredible for those living in well below the poverty line.

Universal Basic Income is communism at best, slavery at second best, and genocide at worst. It is an an idea which has no place in the blockchain community, as it is inherently contradicting to the point of the blockchain.
If/when blockchain technology reaches it's most desired potential, it will lead to the dissolution of governments and coercive systems, and foolish ideas like universal basic income will be as discredited as theories of aether.

You're really going to have to elaborate on your opinion...

Saying extreme claims like it's genocide without backing it up by any form of logical argument is kind of pointless.

Like, sure, I welcome a discussion, it's always interesting when someone has an opposing view, maybe I can learn something. But blanket statements with nothing to back them up isn't conducive to a positive or constructive conversation at all loooool

I'm not saying it is genocide, I am only saying it possibly could end up that way. How is the income provided by the government?

You still haven't explained why though...

Anyway, I think you're missing the point, firstly, Swift Demand isn't even government run whatsoever, everyone just gets 100 tokens a day, it's as simple as that.

But in regards to the topic of Universal Basic Income in general, I do believe it is the future. It's not realistic right now, but in 50-100 years time I see no reasonable alternative.

When we lose the majority of jobs to robots and automation how do you possibly propose we fill the gaps? There will not be enough jobs for the human race, this is where a UBI will be absolutely critical.

It's just being realistic, knowing that in the future robots and AI will do a far better job than humans for many, many tasks. In this scenario, we need to have systems like the UBI in place to ensure everyone has access to a liveable sum of money, even if they don't work.

And of course, if they do choose to work, they will still have significant financial incentive to do so, as explained in my article.

I was attempting to use Socratic questioning to get you to illustrate my point for me. What value does swift demand have that will allow it to be income, and not just Monopoly money? Other alts have practical uses or fix a problem inherent in btc. But if swift is implemented--why would it have value?

And, if there were UBI, and the government wasn't providing it with tax money (which would be equivalent to slavery), then who would provide it?

Well, its inherent value is derived from it's adoption really... it's up to the community to place some kind of value on the token.

If the project doesn't kick off well and isn't adopted, it's not going to be worth anything. But if the user-base expands exponentially and more and more businesses start accepting Swift Tokens as a payment method, the token would obtain an inherant value and would no longer be considered "monopoly money".

I'm not saying the project is perfect by any means, but I'm willing to give it a go and I still stick by my opinion that a UBI will be a necessity in the future.

The money saved from mass automation within the workplace will pay for a UBI. How that is effectively implemented I have no idea as I'm not a politician, I'm just some guy. A "robot-tax" would be one example but I'm sure there are many other ways of doing it.

Well, if crypto by and large succeeds, do you expect that taxation will become impossible? In which case, wouldn't UBI be impossible? My thought is that UBI and the goals of crypto are contradicting.
Also, crypto will solve any and all problems that come about through automation, because it will give people a decentralized protocol to acquire the best prices... which will drop to near 0 due to automation
...And our labor will become our purchasing skill, not our producing skill. No UBI necessary.

But I think maybe swift doesn't actually fit the definition of UBI that I have in mind... Would there be coercion involved in any way?

Hmmm I mean we are getting onto different issues here but even if crypto gets mainstream adoption, that doesn't mean you can't apply taxes.

Profits from crypto for example are taxable, hence why there's the whole controversy over rising crypto prices after the tax returns month etc.

I see what you mean though about decentralization reducing the prices of things substantially, fair point, some level of income will still be necessary though.

There's no coercion in Swift AFAIK, you just get given the tokens, it's as simple as that. It's up to the individual as to whether they want to bother or not.

I see it as an experimental system that may or may not work, but surely the fundamental ideology of a basic income for all is something to be admired?
