Recorded history shows money to be the single most important factor for civilization survival. If money is directly tied to the sustainability of a civilization, than I believe the value of money must absolutely only be valued by intellect of function and only has one pure function, a standard of deferred payment.
However, I will propose something even more radical. Money was not created nor discovered, but is rather an inherited fact of life for some species.
Reproduction is the only life function non asexual species cannot fulfill singly. The required function of reproduction naturally creates competition for specific species; Thus creating supply and demand. Specie groups that hold adequate intellect of function naturally understand the importance of their profession and the benefits it permits. Profession function varies depending upon gender and specie type.
For understanding purposes for those who may not be familiar with economic terminology, definitions are listed below.
- Supply and demand is an economic model of price determination in a market.
- Market is one of the many varieties of system, institutions, procedures, social relations and infrastructures whereby parties engage in exchange.
- Profession is a paid occupation.
- Standard of deferred payment is the accepted way, in a given market, to settle a debt.
For understanding purposes, I have chosen the closest living human relative, the chimpanzee, to prove money is a natural way of life for specific species and can only be valued by intellect of function. To comprehend, it is important you know the social background of the chimpanzee community.
Chimpanzees live in large multiple-male and multiple-female social groups called communities. Within a community, a definite social hierarchy is dictated by the position of an individual and the influence the individual has on others. Chimpanzees live in a leaner hierarchy in which more than one individual may be dominant enough to dominate other members of lower rank. Typically, a dominant male is referred to as the alpha male. The alpha male is the highest-ranking male which controls the group and maintains order during any disputes. In chimpanzee society, the 'dominant male' does not always have to be the largest or strongest male, but rather the most manipulative and political male which can influence the goings on within a group. Male chimpanzees typically attain dominance through cultivating allies who will provide support for that individual in case of future ambitions for power. The alpha male regularly displays by making his normally slim coat puffed up to increase view size and charge to look as threatening and as powerful as possible. This serves to intimidate other members in an attempt to hold on to power and maintain authority, and it may be fundamental to the alpha male's holding on to his status. In contrast to males, which have a main purpose of acquiring dominant status for access to mating privileges and sometimes violent domination of subordinates, females acquire dominant status for access to resources such as food. High-ranking females will often get first access to resources. In general, both genders acquire dominant status to improve social standing within a group.
Since chimpanzees live in communities and have enough intellect to process function, a competitive market is naturally created. The participants in the market are the chimpanzees living in the community. For a chimpanzee to afford commodities available in the marketplace (community), they must earn. Not only must a chimpanzee earn, but the chimpanzee must earn more than other competing chimpanzees to gain the preferred commodities available. In order for a chimpanzee to earn, it must do work or its expected function/profession. For male chimpanzees, this means being a politic. For female chimpanzees, this means being a food finder. The chimpanzees who earn the most become the alphas of the community. For male chimpanzees, money is in the form of alliance and power. For females, money is in the form of food finding rapport. Depending upon the competition within a community, supply and demand determines the price of becoming alpha. The chimpanzees who have the most money, can afford the preferred commodities and the benefits it brings. Male chimpanzees use their money (total combined power) to gain access to the the preferred females for mating purposes. Female chimpanzees spend their money (food finding rapport) to have first access to resources such as food.
Some historians and economists may argue that humans have been bartering before the discovery of money, hence profession and money were not discovered simultaneously. This argument holds true if you believe the four functions William Stanley Jevons analyzed in 1875, a medium of exchange, a common measure of value, a standard value, and a store of value. However, it is important to realize, human intellect has increased since the discovery of profession. I believe money only only has one absolute value, and that is a standard of deferred payment. The modern functions of money were created from intellect and implemented by function.
The definition of standard of deferred payment is the accepted way, in a given market, to settle a debt. If debts didn’t exist, there would be no need for money. It is of utmost importance to remember money is only valued by intellect of function. For this reason, I conclude that money and profession was not created or discovered, but rather an inherited requirement for all non asexual life.
For example, I will refer to the closest living evolutionary relative to humans, the chimpanzee. Chimpanzees live in large multiple-male and multiple-female social groups called communities. Within a community, a definite social hierarchy is dictated by the position of an individual and the influence the individual has on others. For a male chimpanzee to win alpha status, he must gain acceptance from the females in the community. Females have to make sure their group is going to places that supply them with food. Even though male and female chimpanzees are animals, they still owe debts to the community and have a profession which they perform. Males have the profession of a politic in the community with the purpose of acquiring dominant status for access to mating privileges and food benefits. Females have the profession of a food finder. Both genders have the goal to acquire dominant status to improve social standing within a group to acquire the benefits that brings. Like humans, chimpanzees acquire high status within the community by being the best at their profession. For males, money is earned in the form of support and allies from others. For females, money is tangible and comes in the form of food. For chimpanzees, money comes in different form depending upon gender. However, chimpanzees both genders value money with intellect of function and seek to acquire money in order to pay debts and become powerful. In other words, chimpanzees realize the worth of money and what it will acquire them.
Based on this observation, I conclude that chimpanzees certainly have debts they owe to their community and they have a profession in order to fulfill these debts.
It is impossible for money to have value without intellect and function both being present. Intellect is an intangible value, hence it cannot be captured. In order for an intangible value to be captured, a function must make the value exist.
