🔐 Who is to blame and what to do?

in money •  8 years ago

Stealing money from the card - an unpleasant event. The victim is usually the first thing want to blame the bank ( "how did it happen?"), The Central Bank ("find someone to give a license!"), The police ("Where to watch?") And Obama (out of habit). But not you. This position is completely unambiguous consequences. And you do not like.

Shortly before the New Year with friends was the story of spoiled the mood New Year's Eve: Thieves have stolen a credit card and mobile phone. The loss was seen in three hours, one immediately blocked the card. However, immediately after the re-issue it turned out that the money had been withdrawn. In this story, a lot of unexplained activity in the bank. Therefore, there is a chance that missing a few hundred bucks will be able to return, but the translation was confirmed by the code sent to the phone.

I was interested in something else here. The injured party, people are smart and intelligent, hysterical did not arrange to Facebook, but sufficiently transparent accused his troubles both banks - and from where the money went, and they came.

But if you carefully examine the incident, it becomes clear: write-off of loan funds from the card was only possible due to the fact that, along with her phone was stolen, which the thieves got an SMS with the code for translation. This means that, firstly, telephone credit card and stored in one place, and secondly, the phone was initially unlocked (victims have confirmed this). That is, the thieves did not exist no obstacles for committing a crime. Simply make a transfer from card to card and confirm the code.

Of course, we can say that these professionals would be unlikely to stop the phone lock - Sherlock Holmes in the movie, I remember, logically figured out the password in this situation. But in real life, obviously, the chances of a rapid opening of locked phone is not (if the password is not 1111 or 1234). That is, while respecting the most basic safety rules the whole story would have ended buying a new phone under the Christmas tree and re-issue the card.

At the same time their own irresponsible actions of the victims did not recognize. Blame everyone except the man with his own hands to create a huge hole in the security of their own data.

There is the classic question of the responsibility of the victim. On the basis of modern ideas, no guilt, no responsibility crime victim never carries. Condemn her left wide open door of the apartment, walking at night on a dangerous area and left in a prominent place the purse in any case impossible. The right to carelessness and naivety - the inherent right of modern man.

The problem is that the provision of effective security of these "elves" will inevitably lead to the creation of the state Supercop continuous surveillance of each, taking into account each transaction and the TV camera on every corner (and preferably also in each apartment). If a person refuses to at least partial self-provide their own security, the state gladly take this feature on - with obvious consequences. Actually, the process is already under way - and in the developed and underdeveloped world.

Like it Is such a life "elves" themselves? Hardly. At least not for everyone. After all, "our circle of people" used to talk about freedom, the right to privacy and non-interference Comrade Major in our affairs. But if you follow these principles and to protect their lives from the unsleeping eye of law enforcement officers, the part of the responsibility for their own security would have to bear themselves.

Do not leave an open door to the apartment. Do not drop your valuables in the car. Buy a gun and learn how to use it. Lock your phone with a password. And if troubles arise as a result of their irresponsible behavior, blame primarily criminal, in the second - themselves, and only then - the banks, the police, the automaker or Apple with Samsung. And concludes by taking appropriate security measures.

In today's world the phone is often more important "financial entities", than even a purse. It is not only the possibility of obtaining an SMS with the code for card transactions. Phone gives you access to online banking applications, personal contacts (you can ask for all the contact list immediately take a small amount), social networks (the same, but with the help of a public post), contactless payment for purchases in shops, saved passwords in the browser.

See for phone security is necessary with the appropriate attention - at least to block access password, fingerprint, face recognition or other means. In addition, specifically for remote banking generally better to have a second phone, keeping it off (so as not to waste battery). And most importantly - to understand: if nothing you do not, in the case of loss of money will have to blame yourself.
