Toyota Landcruiser 80 Series Drawer System

in monochromes •  5 years ago

I have always wanted to build a drawer system for my Toyota Land Cruiser 80 series. After doing a little research on the internet and gathering up all the project surplus items that I could find, it was project kick-off time. Drawer system was initially drawn on SketchUp software before construction.

This is what the customized 80 series drawer system looks like after completion. Here they are in the fully closed or retracted position. On top of the drawer system is just a subwoofer box with two twelve inches Sony Xplod subwoofers. For those who are interested, the models are listed below.

Subwoofer model : Sony Xplod XS-GTX120L

Peak Power : 1000W

Rated Power : 300W

Rated Impedance : 4 ohms

They are powered by a Sony Xplod XM-GTR 3301D Class D monobloc amplifier.

The drawer system is divided into two compartments. They are deliberately made to be different in width. As you can see the right side drawer compartment is almost two times wider than the left. This is to cater for my 80 series which is the barn door style opening with one door larger than the other. That way I do not need to open both the barn doors in order to access my drawer system.

Below here you can see the drawers when they are both fully extended. The barn door on the left can also be seen as noticeably smaller than the one on the right. The topside, inside bottom, sides and front are covered with carpeting. The same ones that were used for the speaker box. They were leftovers from other projects, kind of keeping the project cost low.

The slides used are of side mounted ball bearing type. They are rated for heavy duty usage capable of carrying heavy loads. The drawer system is constructed of three-quarter inch thick plywood and the drawer bottom constructed from half-inch thick plywood. Pocket hole joinery was used to construct the drawer boxes. Three stainless steel spring loaded drawer pull was used. Spring-loaded was compulsory in order to minimize drawer pull rattles during offtrack journeys. The plywood used was also from previously completed projects and not wanting them to go to waste I decided to utilize them.

In the image on the bottom, you can see the left-hand drawer fully extended. It is almost one thousand millimeters in length when fully extended. When fully retracted it sits flush with the cabinet frame. The drawer pull also sits flush with the front cabinet frame. The drawer pulls were installed in routed holes on the drawer face.

The right drawer is roughly twice the width of the left drawer as can be seen below. It is also advantageous to have a different sized drawer in the setup. I can keep items of various sizes and length in these compartments. There is ample room for over-sized items in the right drawer.

Other projects the I have completed for my 80 series land cruiser are the overhead radio box complete with switches and the pull-down kitchen table top, mounted on the right barn door.

Those drawers are great, I need a landcruiser to do that 🤷 ha ha

The bigger the vehicle the better :)
