Agave silhouette

in monomad •  7 years ago

Agave Americana or Century plant is a very large succulent that has become an invasive plant in my country. It is sometimes planted as a natural hedge and is quite effective for deterring intruders although I am trying to get rid of these. They have been growing without any attempt to curb their spread for the last 10 years or so and have formed an impenetrable wall at the edge of my place. It is useful but I would rather plant something indigenous in its place.

I don't know if I am right or wrong @nikv but it looks like Aloe vera to me, if it is Aloe vera you should try to contact any small cosmetic company or even beautician and I bet you'll get a good amount for this. I guess...

It is not aloe vera

@nikv
Great to see fellow Saffer. The intruder bit as you know is a big advantage I guess. Hope you find something suitable and with the same intruder proof value added bonus.

Happy steeming.
will follow. :-)

Hello Michael
There are plenty of us here. Check out the teamsouthafrica tag sometime. I'm thinking of planting Kei appel but I'm wondering whether it will be frost resistant or not. I'll do more homework.

Happy Steeming to you

@nikv
Thank you, will keep an eye out and also use the tag in future, I usually just use southafrica as a tag. Thank you for response.

I found this bit of info on the Kei appel, seems it would be fine in frosty weather

It is an attractive, drought- and frost-resistant tree or shrub. Dovyalis caffra. ... The Kei-apple grows in valley bushveld, dry areas, wooded grassland, on forest edges, from Eastern Cape through KwaZulu-Natal to Swaziland, into Limpopo [Northern Province] and Zimbabwe. ... The Kei-apple is easily propagated from seed

Stay blessed...

You notice that it doesn't grow naturally in Gauteng? I'm not sure why that would be

hmmm. maybe some proper research is in order :-)

One thing about many of our plants is their adaptation to particular soils. Protea and stamvrug abound on the koppie but Protea only grows in an acid soil, Stamvrug in the rocky quartzite. Perhaps Kei apple doesn't like the soil

Now that you mention the Protea, that is still one of our beautiful plants/flowers I would like to attempt here in my garden, apparently gorws well out here in KZN.

Bonus is I would have free proteas that lasts "forever" :-) will give it a go and report in a post soon.

First time i see you post. Good to see such a nice beauty photography. It seems to me like Aloe Vera. I have many this on my roof top garden. Thanks for sharing with us. @nikv

So hard to rid your self of these pesky plants. Stinging and burning from the juices they produce.

You have taken a great photo of a silohet against the sky. Best of luck. 🐓🐓

Thank you!

Nice photo @nikv
Because of the silhouette it gives it a different look, like an illusion.
When i look at it, I feel like its something from a fantasy movie where plants are massive.
I'll call this one 'invasion of the gigantic agave' lol

They are massive. I will post a picture in the morning and you can see how big they are

oh, can't wait to see it

This is the same plant. Each leaf is over 2m long

agave colour.jpg

Oh my goodness! over 2m long for each leaf!!!!

I am shocked and intrigued at the same time (meow)

That would be a big job to get that out

It is. The way to get rid of them is to use a machete: starting from the bottom, either hack or saw the leaves off close to the plant centre. Once the leaves are off, you can dig it out

It's nature and what you do to us
It is clear that they are uncooperative and form free protection against hackers.
Thankks for great post

Super Black and White

and Very Minimalist <3

*Followed !

Thank you!

Oh cool monochrome picture 🔥

Beautiful photos..am in love with #monomad ..thanks @nikv

I love monochrome too

Love the diagonal arrangement, along with the stark value contrast. Even the clouds support the composition. Well done.

Thank you

My friend, if this plant is agave, and you have a lot of them in yur yard, you can make a lot of tequila hahahaha.
good post.

Ew!

Don't know if you have animals, but agave is a little toxic to cats and dogs, they might not die, but they will surely have a bad time

Very well, a nice mix of lights and shadows, which outline a mysterious figure. Good job.

Very nice shot! I like how you made something so simple appear so creatively! Loving the silhouette of it. :)

nice shot

Very informative..thanks

I did not know what is this dear I can not see this before
