Monomad Tuesday: Street

in monomad •  7 years ago

The wall pictured here is a few blocks from my house. There are a few informal businesses in this street; a car wash, hairdressers and an upholsterer. There are also some rooms to rent by the hour and a large brothel further up the road.
The area is one of the oldest suburbs in Johannesburg, it has always been a working-class neighbourhood although most of the factories are closed or moved elsewhere and the area is a melting-pot of cultures and immigrants from all parts of Africa.

People living here are mostly poor and this graffiti has been here for many years without being painted over

"who's saying graffiti is ugly?"

graffiti.jpg

I love graffitti like this, it's a real work of art. I was toying with the idea of inviting some artists to come and spray my exterior walls, there are some talented people around. Pity my neighbourhood is mostly full of ugly little tags

That is awesome!

Who would want to remove that from the wall? It looks beautiful.
from @zahid8zait

I like it too, but some people are obsessed with getting rid of graffiti

Great shot! Its not often people post graff in black and white but you have really captured the mood on this one! Look forward to see some more of that SA graff 😉😊

This one was easy for black and white because it is all black and silver and the general griminess of the area lends itself to black and white as well

Nice 😉

Sounds like an interesting area. 😊

It is, there's never a dull moment here: some dangerous, some funny, some bizarre. Much more interesting than middle-class sububia

I bet! Sounds like a cool life experience to add to the books.

I really like this @nikv. may i resteem have you @nikv

it's a very interesting graffiti, how good you could capture it!

Can you read whats written on that wall?

شيئ من العنصرية إتجاه الأفارقة

"Something of racism towards Africans" How is this so since I am an African and I live in this neighbourhood too?

you told that because you didn't know the africans well bro and as is see your article here i think you'r wrong. also you are racists about telling that africans are immigrated to there anayway thank u for sharing your opinion with as
شكرآ

I'm confused. I dont see how it is racist. An immigrant is someone who migrates to another country to live. And Africa is made up of many countries.

Firstly, I am not your bro, I am a woman. Anyone who comes to my country from another is an immigrant, that is not a judgment but a description. Johannesburg is an African city, in an African country. You don't know me and it is your assumption that I don't know Africans well. Perhaps it's better not to comment on other people's posts in Arabic with your assumptions when it is clear that you don't really understand too much English.

Your work is great @nikv

Is it a Shanti town? We have got quite numerous of such settlements in my contry, we call them Ghettos. It is a hub for the poor and lower class. But ironically most great talents in arts, music and movie industries would emanate from the Ghettos.

No. it is not a shanty town, just an old, poorer but vibrant part of the city
