First Friday? Time for a 2600 Magazine Readers Meeting

in monthly •  8 years ago

One of the legacies of the TAP newsletter was the dinner meetings that The Regulars would hold every Friday night in either Midtown, or Lower Manhattan. After 2600 Magazine got established, some of the readers wanted to get together to meet, and socialize. It was decided that the First Friday of every month is when the magazine's readers would get together, and that anyone could set up a meeting anywhere they wanted.

The Rules are simple, the meetings must be in a public place (shopping mall food courts are typical), and no one can be excluded from a meeting. After all, the magazine's readers are mostly made up of the kind of geeks and nerds you see on the TV show "The Big Bang Theory", and we're too used to being excluded.

I live in the sleepy little town of Titusville FL, bedroom community to the Kennedy Space Center. I've been listing a meeting here for years, and every few years someone actually shows up! It's OK. I've put my meeting in a local bar in the Downtown area that has free Wi-Fi, so I can keep myself amused when no one shows up, but if they should, the Wi-Fi will let us show off the links on the net that let us share information. After all, "Share The Knowledge" is the primary reason for having having these meetings in the first place.

Of course, finding the meeting place can be a problem. I'm suggesting to 2600's Executive Staff that the Meeting organizers should go up on What3Words.Com, and find the three words that locate their meeting location, and submit them with their next Monthly Report to be add to the listing at http://2600.Com/meetings

Check it out. The What Three Words people are working with delivery companies to provide the Three Words for any delivery location that a "civilian" can work with without all the mathematics of Latitude and Longitude. My own meeting location uses the locating words of followers.ambient.radio with the URL of http://w3w.co/followers.ambient.radio

So if you're near Titusville FL on the First Friday of the month, I'll expect you to drop in.
