One of the classic moments from the James Bond films takes place in the first few minutes of 1964's Goldfinger. Having wiggled out of his wet suit, Sean Connery steps into a smoky Latin nightclub where he flicks his cigarette lighter to check the time on his wristwatch.

I was a commercial diver and diving instructor for 30+ years and bought such a Rolex in 1965. I wore it everywhere never taking it off (not even for sex). Funny thing is it NEVER kept time no matter how many tune-ups, cleaning etc. it got. I always thought it was the rough life and figured any other watch would have just died.
The bezel was even pitted with rust and the stem winder was broken when I sold it 3 years ago for $3500. The cost to repair would have exceeded its value and I am too old to wait for any appreciation in value.
My kids were pissed because they wanted an heirloom.
