A Pairing of the Moon and Jupiter - October 2023

in moon •  last year

A pairing of a waning gibbous Moon and Jupiter with its four Galilean moons visible tonight dances in the sky after the Harvest Supermoon. Uranus and the Pleiades (M45) in the constellation Taurus follow in the glare of our Moon that is illuminating the zenith on its way to setting in the western sky at sunrise.

Unfortunately, these type of astronomical events can only be seen with proper equipment.

Galileo had less than the 2.7-inch aperture used for that photo, and that's enough to see four Galilean moons. Almost everyone can see these pairings because they're big and bright, and this one with the Moon and Jupiter was high in the sky until sunrise.
