Happy Moon Monday! What the hezmana is that, you say? Well, for the past couple of months, I've been sharing some of my moon pictures and it's always on Mondays! Today, I'm sharing 12 Shots of the Waxing Gibbous Moon (give or take a day or few from being exact).
I figured the timing was perfect, since we're just days away from the upcoming full Sturgeon Moon on the 15th. What makes the moon a Waxing Gibbous one? According to timeanddate.com -
50.1% to 99.9% Illuminated
Just after the First Quarter Moon, when we can see exactly half of the face of the Moon illuminated, the intermediate phase called Waxing Gibbous Moon starts.
Waxing means that it is getting bigger. Gibbous refers to the shape, which is less than the full circle of a Full Moon, but larger than the semicircle shape of the Moon at Third Quarter.
With some exceptions, the Waxing Gibbous Moon rises during the day, after noon. It is usually visible in the evening and sets after midnight.
During this period, the lit up portion of the Moon increases from 50.1% to 99.9%.
Technically, this phase lasts until the moment of Full Moon. However, it can be difficult to differentiate the last stage of a Waxing Gibbous Moon from a Full Moon when as much as 98% to 99% of the Moon's surface is illuminated.
As long as the weather cooperates, I'm planning to head out on Thursday with my camera to catch some new shots of La Luna. Spoiler alert - I actually managed to take a bunch of pictures yesterday afternoon of a visit from a feathered friend, so I'll have fresh fotos for the #FeatheredFriday tag! I'm hoping to keep up this trend - while it's a bit of an added challenge getting clear photos with my ever present (even if it's not visible) Essential Tremor, I figure practice makes perfect, right? And it's high time I got to shutterbugging again on a regular basis.
Also, all of these photos were taken with my Nikon (which I talk about in this post) whilst making use of my handy dandy tripod, between July 2017 and January 2019, in our Durham New Hampshire yard.

Brilliant moon pics. I tried, but don't see a butterfly on any of them though!
Photographing the moon can be difficult. You've done a good job on that.

These are great shots! My son and I have been playing around shooting the moon. We have found that a tripod sure makes it easier. Also, we learned to control the camera through the phone app so we can be inside from the mosquitoes.
