Do we understand what tolerance really is?

Are you cool with the idea that the government can force you to say something, or do something that you find to be deeply immoral?

It's one thing to tell people to suck it up and accept it when a speech and actions which they don't like or find uncomfortable is protected by the law. In fact, if you don't, liberty is in trouble. It's the idea that I'll leave you alone if you leave me alone.

You know...tolerance.

This movement to force bakers and photographers to work on gay weddings isn't tolerance. There's nothing about tolerance that compels participation.

You tolerate things that you don't like. I tolerate ads for law firms. I tolerated The Hobbit. I tolerate people who think that they have the right to police langue (I don't tolerate those who actually do.) That doesn't mean that I have to like any of those things or participate in order to be tolerant.

You're not calling for tolerance. You're not even really calling for acceptance. You're calling for people to conform to your singular moral vision and use government to compel them to participate.

This is getting horrifying. We've already created a culture that hounded a porn star to death because she wouldn't perform with men who had done gay scenes. We also have activists saying that it's bigotry if you don't want to have sex with a woman with a penis.

We have to understand what tolerance is. Right now, it seems we have no idea.
