History of development
Sultan Ma'mun Al Rasyid Perkasa Alam as the leader of Deli Sultanate began construction of Masjid Raya Al Mashun on August 21, 1906 (1 Rajab 1324 H). The entire construction was completed on September 10, 1909 (25 Sha'ban 1329 H) at once used which was marked by the first Friday prayers in this mosque. The whole construction cost about one million guilders. The Sultan had deliberately built this royal mosque with magnificence, because in principle it is more important than the splendor of his own palace, Maimun Palace. The funding of the mosque's construction is borne solely by the Sultan, but it is said that Tjong A Fie, a Medan city figure from ethnic Chinese who contemporaries with Sultan Ma'mun Al Rashid, contributed to finance the construction of this mosque.
Architectural
In the beginning Masjid Raya Al Mashun was designed by Dutch architect Van Erp who also designed the Maimun palace, but then the process was done by JA Tingdeman. Van Erp was then summoned to Java by the Dutch East Indies government to join the restoration of Borobudur temple in Central Java. Some of the building materials imported include: marble for decoration imported from Italy, Germany and stained glass from China and live chandelier from France.
JA Tingdeman, the architect designs this mosque with a rectangular symmetrical plan in the mixed Moroccan, European and Malay and Middle East buildings. This eighth-floor plan produces a unique inner space unlike most mosques. Four corners of the mosque are each furnished with verandahs with high black domed roofs, complementing the main dome on the roof of the main mosque building. Each of the verandas is fitted with a main door and a connecting ladder between the court and the main floor of the elevated mosque, except the veranda building on the side of the mihrab.
The building of the mosque is divided into the main hall, the ablution, the entrance and the tower. The main hall, prayer place, octagonal shaped not the same side. On the smaller side of the face, there is a small porch 'porch' that is attached and jutted out. The windows that surrounded the wooden verandah door with precious stained glass, the remains of Art Nouveau period 1890-1914, combined with Islamic art. All the ornamentation inside the mosque is well on the walls, ceilings, pillars, and curved surfaces that are rich in flower ornaments and plants. in front of each porch there is a ladder. Then, the octagon, on the outside, appears with four alleys on all four sides, which surround the main prayer room.
These alleys have rows of leafless, arch-shaped windows that stand on the block. Both the porch and the arch windows reminded the building designs of the Islamic kingdoms of Spain in the Middle Ages. While the dome of the mosque following the Turkish model, with a broken shapes beregi eight. The main dome is surrounded by four other domes above each veranda, with smaller sizes. The shape of the dome reminds us of the Great Mosque of Banda Aceh. On the inside of the mosque, there are eight main pillars of 0.60 m diameter towering to support the main dome in the center. The mihrab is made of marble with a pointed dome roof. The gate of this mosque is square-shaped roof. While the mosque minaret decorated with blend between Egypt, Iran and Arab.
