In a photograph published in his Twitter account, the Iraqi prime minister is dressed in a black military uniform on his arrival in Mosul to announce the conquest of the city, taken by jihadists in June 2014.

This does not mean the end of the war against the EI, which still controls some areas in the country and territories in eastern and central Syria.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over the Islamic state in Mosul after announcing the total release of the country's second city that had been taken by the jihadist group three years ago.

"The commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces (al-Abadi) arrived in the liberated city of Mosul this Sunday and congratulated the heroic fighters and the Iraqi people for this great victory," said the spokesman for the head of government in a statement Published on Twitter.

Once congratulating the military units, al-Abadi went to the headquarters of the Federal Police to meet with the main commanders and military of the different units that have carried out the military operation for almost nine months, according to the site Iraqi News.

Official television reported that Special Anti-Terror Service forces have hoisted the national flag on the banks of the Tigris River flanking the Old City of Mosul and that in the next few hours al-Abadi will proclaim the final defeat of the EI.

The arrival of al-Abadi to Mosul took place after Iraqi troops lifted the national flag on the banks of the Tigris, the escape route of the last EI stronghold in the city, in the Maidan neighborhood.

However, the reconquest of Mosul does not mean the end of the war against the EI, which still controls some areas in the country and territories in eastern and central Syria, where its Al Raqa fief is besieged by forces also supported by U.S.
