What Being a Mother Means

Happy Mother's Day!

Now I have taken the last 24 hours to really think about what it means to be a mother. It's more than a commercialized holiday. It's not fancy gifts as we are brainwashed into thinking. It's not fancy cards either. It's the hand made cards our children make from their heart. It's treasuring gifts which our child or children make. Alongside their dad (or co-parent).

Being a mom is giving of yourself. And when you don't think you have any more to give, find it and give it. Being present in your child's life. That means you put down your phone and actually have a conversation with your child. Don't force a conversation. Leave the door open to conversations. Take time to make cookies and have conversations.

I have found over the last 16 years of being a mom that this is the best solution. Always love them and be patient with them and yourself. Learn from parents who have multiple children. Most of all love them unconditionally. Children have to believe they can come to you no matter what. They have to feel like they can trust in you as their parent. And know that there are consequences for bad behavior. Be fair and loving.
