If you CHOSE to celebrate “Mother’s Day” yesterday, then, congratulations: I genuinely hope you had a spectacular day WITH your mother -- assuming, of course, that you were fortunate enough to HAVE a good mother, who is still alive & healthy, to celebrate.
That being said, I pray that you also remember the fact that there are many people who are less fortunate than you are, who felt OBLIGATED to feel happy & celebrate Mother's Day -- even though they lost their mother, didn’t have a mother because they were abandoned, or just flat-out had a bad mother whom they resented.
On top of that, there are mothers who feel guilty because they couldn’t be or aren’t being a better mother to their children -- even the mothers who were busy posting about how great of a day they had were only PRETENDING to be happy about Mother's Day.
The truth is, the majority actually felt GLOOMY on the inside, & were PRETENDING to feel good about Mother's Day on the outside.
For those of you who felt gloomy about Mother's Day, I feel for you, but I ask that you indulge in my way of thinking for just a moment: instead of CHOOSING to feel gloomy about Mother's Day because you don’t or didn’t have a mother, be happy & celebrate, because you’re now recognizing how crucial the ROLE of a mother is. If you’re a woman, choose to now actively demonstrate the QUALITIES of a mother that you were deprived of -- because a mother role ISN'T just biological: it’s also a TITLE & POSITION that one can hold ABSENT a biological child. If you’re a man, CHOOSE to celebrate the QUALITIES of a mother, regardless of whether or not you have children, and regardless of whether or not you had a mother.
Celebrate the things you WANT or WANTED in a mother, and celebrate the women who EXHIBIT the TRAITS of a mother (for example, being NURTURING to her children AND man). Celebrate the women who, in so doing, DESERVE the TITLE of "mother."
In other words, choose to view “Mother’s Day” not in terms of whether or not you have a mother, but in terms of acknowledging the crucial importance of the ROLE of a mother in every person's life. Recognize that it's more about what a mother REPRESENTS, & the QUALITIES a mother DEMONSTRATES.
&, most importantly, recognize that Mother’s Day is NOTHING without FATHER’S DAY, & that FATHER’S DAY is NOTHING without Mother’s Day.
