“What makes a hero? Courage, strength, morality, withstanding adversity? Are these the traits that truly show and create a hero? Is the light truly the source of darkness or vice versa? Is the soul a source of hope or despair? Who are these so called heroes and where do they come from? Are their origins in obscurity or in plain sight?”
-Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Notes from Underground, White Nights, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, and Selections from The House of the Dead
-Every child has their own hero. A person they look up to, an inspiration. In our childhood days, we will say those comic book heroes we see from the movies, from the books. Those that come with flashy costumes and superpowers. As we grow up, we begin to look up to real people, like celebrities, athletes, politicians, scientists, and whoever it is that is known or famous. But you see, there are even greater heroes than they are and we never have to look far. Oftentimes, we take them for granted, we are ungrateful and full of ourselves and still they remain beside us, loving us unconditionally.
When I was a kid, I was ignorant. I wasn’t aware of how harsh life can be. I didn’t understand why our mom have to be away all the times, I knew she’s working but I didn’t understand how it hurts her to be away from us. I got used to it. Teenage years came, and still I was ignorant. I heard things but it didn’t bother me, I was too caught up in my own world that I didn’t know anything. My mom, she had gone through everything by herself. She was afraid, that’s for sure, but she held strong because she knew we still need her. She battled every obstacle and adversity that went her way, because she was doing it for us. She is the strongest person I know. She is optismistic as much as she is a realist, i know that is contradicting, but she hopes and prays that reality isn’t that harsh. That there is always a way for things to be better. She never gave up, because, ungrateful at times we can be, for her we are her treasures.
Our moms. They are the epitome of heroism. They are selfless, unwavering and strong. They might not have those superpowers, but they have unparalled skills in multi-tasking, time management and teaching valuable life lessons. I know, not all mothers are good or perfect. But there are women, who filled that spot for us. Women, who became mothers just because they can. Just like the saying goes : All women can be mothers, but not all can be a mom. Yes, biologically, they can be, but it takes a certain kind of love to be a mom. They might not be our blood and flesh, but they certainly loved us, liked their own. And they deserved to be acknowleged. For they also made us better people than we can ever hope to be.
Happy mothers Day to all the supermoms out there!
