You often hear that motivation is a bunch of nonsense.
'It's not motivation that will do the trick, it is discipline!'
And although I agree with a huge portion of that statement, it is sort of misleading. Discipline will help you get there. But discipline mixed with the right motivation will help you get there AND have fun.
But understand that there are 2 kinds of motivation:
Motivation that doesn't last.
Motivation that lasts.
For group 1, picture the people who begin the year off with a bunch of New Years resolutions.
They are going to get in shape.
They are going to stay committed to their diet.
They are going to start that business that they've been delaying.
So they begin the year off with a bunch of enthusiasm for the task.
They work & hustle away.
Day in & day out, their motivation has them feeling pumped.
But as a few weeks go by? That motivation begins to melt away.
They realize that the beginning portion of any venture is the hardest part.
They didn't plan for the roadblocks along the way, so when they face them, they get discouraged.
They get so discouraged that after hitting a view roadblocks, they decide to quit.
Tsk tsk.
Don't believe me?
Compare January 2nd of the gym to March 2nd.
You'll notice a massive difference.
The reason that this group quit was because their intention was wrong from the get go.
Ask them why they are doing what they are doing & they typically will give you a shallow answer or no answer at all!
They will say they are doing it for adoration, to prove someone wrong or just because they are bored.
And when you don't have your why, you begin are working towards quitting.
But the motivation that lasts?
Different.
The motivation that lasts requires a 2 part process: The Push & Pull.
You need to combine fear & pleasure.
Push: Runaway
In this step, you are running away from what scares you the most. So if you want to stay motivated for the gym, then you need to run away from obesity, a heart attack, not living long enough to see your family etc.
Pull: Run towards
In this step, you are running towards something that has you feeling good. A 6 pack, more stamina, fitting into your old clothes etc.
You need to combine both emotions unleash a fire within you that radiates.
Not one that dims when the going gets tough.
Some people ask me why I work so hard. That's because I am afraid of mediocrity & hopeful for success.
I never work, I just do what I was born to do.
That's how you use emotions to fuel your discipline.
Find out your push & pull.
Than use that motivation to fuel your routine & make your discipline fun.
Make your emotions work for you rather than against you.
