If there was one thing that I have learned about myself since returning to education as an adult, it is this;
I am not as smart as I thought I was!
Believe me, This can be a very frustrating revelation, But It’s not only me that likes to think of themselves as some kind of undiscovered genius, No, most people In modern day society seem to suffer from some form narcissistic thinking pattern, And when I say suffer, I mean it!
It is my belief that this feeling of inadequacy that forms in most people when being taught something new, Has resulted in many people choosing to actively avoid furthering their own education and development as a human being simply for the sake of shielding their own ego. Preferring to be tough and act as if they are smart enough, Rather than suck it up, Admit that they don't know as much as they previously thought, and get to cracking books.
Once you come to accept this daunting fact about yourself and realize that you can change it, through hard work and study, it can be quite a humbling experience. You come to realize that it's ok, that no one is "born smart", that everyone has to work for it, And that you can truly do anything that you put your mind too.
This revelation can also have a slight side effect: Once you realize how much you don't know, You also start to realize how much other people don't know, and this can be downright maddening.
