A few years ago my wife and I decided to visit her cousin Sergio who had been in prison for over 5 years in a jail near Savannah, Georgia. We got there on a Saturday morning around 8am. We both signed off the visitation paperwork; however she was the only person on Sergio’s visitation list. She went through security, I went back to the car and she calls me and said “I’m been told I can’t get in” “why?” I replied. “I don’t know, I didn’t understand what they are saying, please come back”. I went back and the official said “Sergio is in detention and while he is in detention he is not allowed visits nor phone calls or any other privileges; you can call Mr. Morales on Monday to see if he can make an exception” “but we drove all the way from Ohio to see him as he is feeling down” I replied. “I’m sorry there is nothing else I can do and you should have called before leaving home”. The lady gave us a phone number and we returned to the car. My wife looked at me and said “call him” “now?” I replied. “Yes, now”, “But its Saturday!, he is not going to answer and the lady said to call him on Monday” “Please call him now”, “OK” I replied. So I called the number and I was surprised that someone picked up. I asked for Mr Morales but I was told he was not in the office. I explained to the officer that we were coming from Ohio to see Sergio to cheer him up. He kindly asked us for a call back number and that he will tried to reach Mr. Morales. I said thank you and hang up. Next day, Sunday morning, my wife asked me “please call them again”, “but they will not answer! It’s Sunday!” “Please, just call them one more time” she replied. I took a deep breath and said “OK”. So I called. Again I was surprised they answered. After explaining to him the situation, the officer said “are you the one who called yesterday?” “Yes” I replied. And he replied back “Did you know that when someone is in detention he is not allowed any visits?” “Ye Sir, I know, we just didn’t know” I replied. “Why didn’t you call?” He asked. “My wife called but there was no answer and we decided to drive down from Ohio” “You drove all the way from Ohio?” He asked. “Yes we did” I replied. He then said “give me one second” I then heard that he asked someone “why is he in the hole?” But I couldn’t hear the answer from who he was asking. He picks the phone and asked me again “You really came all the way from Ohio?” “Yes Sir” I replied instantly. “Ok, for today only, anyone in the visitation list is allowed to see him” I could not believe what I was hearing and my voice broke down for a moment. “Thank you so much Sir, thank you so much” I replied. My wife is looking at me and said “so what did they say?” “They said, yes! you can see him!!” it was around 8:30am when we arrived to the place and she gets in. I went to the beach. I returned and picked her up, had dinner and drove back to home. Later that week we received a letter from Sergio. One item that I never forget is that Sergio had mentioned in his letter the following: “next day after Sonia visit me, the prison guard told me with great enthusiasm, ‘I told so, if I had allowed you to make that call, you would had not been able to see your relative!’” Sergio remembered that we wanted to visit him and he had asked the prison guard to allow him to make a call so that we would not go see him. Sergio had a condition of extreme anxiety and whenever he felt he would have an episode, he would ask the prison guard to put him in detention so that he could not hurt anyone around him while he was not in control of himself. If Sergio had been allowed to make the call we would had stopped from going to visit him, but he was not allowed. When I made the calls to request for an exception, I personally had no hope and very little faith. But regardless of all the trouble, for God there are no impossibles, he works in mysterious ways.
Thank you and be blessed!
