6 Ways to Overcome Shyness and Increase Your Confidence

Are you shy? Do you find it difficult to deal with people or situations? Then I have good news for you. You don't have to suffer from shyness, and you shouldn't feel insecure about every step you take and fear being judged.

Winning the war against shyness takes practice, but it's really worth it because the result is an increase in self-confidence and self-esteem. Wake up and feel comfortable in your skin, you can face the world with confidence and assurance, and know that no feeling of shyness can stop you from achieving your goals.

Hundreds of books have been written on the subject of how to overcome shyness and gain confidence, but there are some techniques that anyone can put into practice. Here are six suggestions for techniques you can use to overcome your shyness:

  1. every morning, as soon as you get up, stand in front of a mirror and say out loud, "I feel great! I feel great! I feel great!" Repeat this affirmation with enthusiasm at least ten times a day until it becomes ingrained in your subconscious. If you feel a little uncomfortable at first, lock yourself in the bathroom. The results will amaze you.

  2. Feel comfortable in your skin. Put yourself out there. Get dressed more often. This will give you an added sense of confidence and self-esteem. Just knowing that you are well dressed boosts your self-confidence and reinforces to others that there are things about you that are worth knowing.

  3. Take a risk at least once a day. This is very energizing and overcoming fears by taking risks will help you increase your confidence and self-esteem. Start with small risks and fears, and as you overcome them, move on to bigger things. There is nothing you cannot accomplish. Be confident that change can only help you grow and build your confidence.

  4. When you are involved in a one-on-one conversation or with a larger group of people, let them know you are shy. This will keep them from misinterpreting you, and they will be much more likely to invite you to join the conversation rather than listening and wishing you could contribute.

Many people, myself included, find it difficult to follow a conversation in a noisy room. If you are having difficulty, say so and step aside so you can hear. People respect honesty and vulnerability, and so you will attract more honest people into your life.

  1. Rejection is a fact of life that everyone knows. Rarely is it you who is rejected. If you are rejected, such as asking someone out, remember that everyone has different likes and dislikes. You may be attracted to a certain type of person and not others. The same is true for other people and you are probably not their type. This does not devalue you in any way. Accept it and know that you will get over it. Never take it personally and remember that when people reject you, it is because of what they like or dislike, not because of who you are. You have just as much right to reject others because of what you like or dislike.

  2. Engage in activities that make you feel enthusiastic and good, or start a hobby that makes you feel relaxed. This can range from gardening to Tai Chi to karate. Take lessons, learn or master a musical instrument, or take singing lessons. Do something that excites you and take risks. Exploring things that excite you is an excellent antidote to shyness.
