Don’t Trust Motivation; It Is Unreliable

in motivation •  8 years ago

You can’t trust motivation. It is unreliable. As you go to bed, motivation will make a promise to be there with you in the morning so you can do all the stuff you’ve planned. It will assure you of its loyalty.

Then you will wake up and motivation is nowhere to be found. It won’t be around. So because there is no motivation, you won’t have the guts to go for the early morning run. Because you have no motivation, you won’t send that email or make that important call. But for how long shall your dreams rest on motivation’s decisions?

It’s time to say; “to hell with motivation, I am going to do this or that whether I am motivated or not.”

So what you need is not motivation but self-discipline. Self-Discipline to force yourself to do shit. Because you are going to be forcing yourself to do a lot of things.

It’s like a writer waking up without the energy to write but forcing oneself to write. That’s self-discipline.

Self-Discipline is reliable, it won’t abandon you. It won’t ask whether it’s raining or not. It won’t make excuses unlike motivation.

You think all those guys are motivated day in and day out, 90% of the time is self-discipline, it’s only 10% that is motivation.

Begin to force yourself to do the things you should do even when you don’t feel like. Develop your self-discipline, develop your thick skin. Motivation can catch up with you in the middle of game, but do not count on it. It’s unreliable.

Totally agree. Discipline and self-reinforcing systems are much better than motivation and inspiration.

Systems that set you up for success remove the willpower and motivation from the equation completely.

Profound.
