Making changes in your life is fantastic because it helps us mature and improve as people. Being a human involves experiencing change on a constant basis. You must begin where you are when attempting to change anything in your life. It would be challenging to make the change effectively until you know where that is. You must establish a baseline.
By establishing a baseline, you can accurately assess your current situation and actions and determine exactly what needs to be changed. Many of us are unaware of what we do, which may sound odd. The first thing I ask of my clients when they say they want to lose weight is to keep a food journal for a week to establish a baseline. They talk about how surprised they were to see not only how much they were eating, but also what they were eating the following week. Many of us simply do not know what we are doing because we are operating on autopilot. You can get a clear picture of where you are and what needs to change when you track it, and this applies to anything.
I once read a statistic that claimed the majority of people typically spend 10% more than they earn. I think that is the case because purchases made, particularly those made with a credit card, are not recorded. I once worked with a client who simply lacked the time to complete everything she needed to. She was painfully made aware of how much time she was wasting in front of the television when she tracked her time for a week. Being aware is the first step in change. Before moving forward, you must become aware of what you are doing and your exact location. You can get useful information to support your change effort by keeping track for a week or two.
You must be aware of where you are before beginning any type of change effort. It reminds me of those road maps with an X next to "You are here" on them. It won't be possible to make the necessary change until you are aware of exactly where you are, and many of us don't know.
Finding out where you are is the first step in making a change. For a week or two, keep a journal. This will help you understand what you are doing realistically. Everything from your financial spending to your sleep schedule can be tracked. You can move forward once you are aware of your location's reality.
