The biggest obstacle I've found when starting a new hobby or trying to learn a skill like many is that procrastination always gets in the way. You're trying to write an article or develop a personal project but something always comes up - that new episode that you've been dying to watch just came on, or a friend just invited you to a get together. Distractions are all around us.
Just recently I picked up the book The Power of Concentration by Theron Q. Dumont. In it Dumont writes, "The person who cannot direct his thoughts, wishes, plans, resolutions and studies cannot possibly succeed to the fullest extent." If one wants to successful at any skill they need to be passionate and have consistency. Angela Duckworth whose book Grit: Perseverance and passion for long-term goals. is currently on the New York Times bestseller list describes this blend of passion and consistency as grit. She believes that society often misjudges talent, and IQ among other things as indicative of success. Through her research she found that "Grit demonstrated incremental predictive validity of success measures over and beyond IQ and conscientiousness."
Imposing your will upon finishing a task, not being distracted by external stimuli, having a clear sense of your goals these things are the ultimate indicators of success.
One of my favorite YouTubers Casey Neistat recently reached 3 million subscribers on YouTube and he pointed to three words that got him to where he is today which are Just Keep Uploading and I believe that if anyone truly follows the Just Keep X-ing model success will not be far behind.
