Travels with Connie #2 Sedona, Arizona

in motorcycle •  7 years ago

Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it's easy, pick a route and go.

More often I have an idea where I'd like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.

Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.

Headed for Sedona, AZ for lunch. Sedona is an interesting place. There are all kinds of people and businesses. It's a 'new age' place thought by the Hippies and New Agers to be sacred and spiritual. Interestingly enough, it also has a long history with the indigenous population as a special place.

It's best known for the red rocks that provide the backdrop to everything in and around Sedona. It is an incredibly senic part of Arizona, and also incredibly 'touristy'. It's also home to a wonderful BBQ joint where you can roll up your sleeves, tuck one of your napkins in your collar and eat ribs joint, Hog Wild.

We Commence

This day I have the great fortune to be riding with my friend Bob Smith. Bob is a big time Iron Butt and probably the best riding partner I've ever had. Bob is a little more OCD than I am about routing. He never leaves home without having his GPS programmed-and I am more than willing to follow

It's all of 300 miles by the route Bob chose, typically one of the best rides in all of Arizona. When the weather is just slightly better :) On highway 89A south of Prescott we had intermittent snow and sleet on compact snow and ice. Not so good on a motorcycle. It did provide some rare and wonderful photos of snow capped Sedona.

Mingus Mountain Road is good, the scenery untypical white.

Cold riding is it's own special beast, if you are not prepared it can be brutal. I have an Aerostitch Road Crafter riding suit with a Warm N Safe electric jacket liner so I am pretty well off. I will admit to being cold to the point of shivering on the previously mentioned piece of 89A.

This trip will go on, but for today I'm going to leave you with another couple of Red Rocks pictures.
