Mount Lawu (3,265 m) is located on the island of Java, Indonesia, precisely on the border of Central Java and East Java Province. Mount Lawu is located between the three districts of Karanganyar District, Central Java, Ngawi District, and Magetan Regency, East Java. The status of this mountain is a "break" volcano (estimated to have erupted on 28 November 1885 [3] [4]) and has long been dormant, visible from vegetation density and eroding peaks. On the slopes is a small crater that still releases water vapor (fumarole) and sulfur (solfatara). Mount Lawu has a forest area of Dipterocarp Hill, Upper Dipterocarp Forest, Montane Forest, and Ericaceous Forest. Mount Lawu is the source of inspiration from the Argo Lawu train name, the executive train serving Solo Balapan-Gambir.
Mount Lawu has three peaks, Puncak Hargo Dalem, Hargo Dumiling and Hargo Dumilah. The last one is the highest peak.
On the slopes of this mountain there are a number of popular places as a tourist destination, especially in areas Tawangmangu, Cemorosewu, and Sarangan. Somewhat down, on the west side there are two enshrinement complexes of the Majapahit period: Sukuh Temple and Cetho Temple. At the foot of this mountain is also located the burial complex of relatives Praja Mangkunagaran: Astana Girilayu and Astana Mangadeg. Near the complex is located Astana Giribangun, the mausoleum for the family of Indonesia's second president, Suharto.
Mount Lawu is very popular for climbing activities. Every night 1 Sura many people make pilgrimage by climbing to the top. Because of its popularity, at the top of the mountain can even be found food traders.
Standard climbing can be started from two places (basecamp): Cemorokandang in Tawangmangu, Central Java, and Cemorosewu, in Sarangan, East Java. The second entrance gate is only 200 m apart.
Climb from Cemorosewu through two springs: Sendang (pond) Panguripan is located between Cemorosewu and Pos 1 and Sendang Drajat between Post 4 and Post 5.
Climbing through Cemorokandang will pass 5 selers with relatively well-ordered paths.
Climbing through cemorosewu will pass 5 posts. The path through Cemorosewu is more track. However, if we pass this path we will reach the peak faster than the Cemorokandang path. Climbing through Cemorosewu is quite well organized. The road is made of arranged stone.
The path from heading 3 to post 4 is a ladder made of natural stone. Post 4 is newly renovated, so for now in post 4 there is no building for shelter. Usually we do not realize we have reached post 4.
Near the post 4 we can see the lake Sarangan from caught. The path from heading 4 to heading 5 is very convenient, not tracking like the path leading to heading 4. In post 2 there is a gedhe watu we call watu iris (because like in iris).
Near the entrance of Cemorosewu there is a building like a mosque that turns out to be a tomb. To climb through Cemorosewu (for beginners) do not climb at night because the terrain is heavy for beginners.
Above the peak of Hargo Dumilah there is one monument.
Mount Lawu keeps a mystery on each of its three major peaks and becomes a place that is postulated as a sacred place in the Land of Java. Price Dalem is believed to be the pamoksan of King Bhrawijaya Pamungkas, Dumiling Price is believed to be the pampoksan of Ki Sabdopalon, and Dumilah Price is a place full of mystery that is often used as a venue to the ability of mental and meditation.
It is said that Lawu mountain is the center of spiritual activity in the Land of Java and closely related to the tradition and culture of Praja Mangkunegaran.
Everyone who wants to go to the top should understand the unwritten prohibitions for not doing something, both deeds and words. If the prohibition is violated the perpetrator is believed to be fateful.
Other places that are believed to be mysterious by the locals are: Sendang Inten, Sendang Drajat, Sendang Panguripan, Jalatunda Well, Candradimuka Crater, Hotspring / Cakrasurya, and Pringgodani.
