Mountain Monday: Bittersweet Days

#mountainmonday is a tag hosted by @keithboone.

My Mountain Monday is connected to Aunt Beulah’s funeral and my birthday.

My birthday was bittersweet this year.

Hubby & I had driven 6 hours from P.E.I. to New Brunswick for a funeral of a cherished family member on Halloween, the day before my birthday.

Aunt Beulah

Aunt Beulah had only been ill a few weeks but it was serious. Hearing she was not expected to survive, I kept thinking,

”Please don’t die on my birthday as my mother had!”

Beulah was the last family member of my parent’s generation.

She had married Dad’s brother Joe and now in her 98th year.

Amazingly she still had her wits, lived in her own apartment and was a great historian about people and events in the family- revealing some secrets that had been sweep under the carpet.

I delighted in visiting Aunt Beulah. she never let you leave without joining her for a cup of tea and homemade donuts or big slice of chocolate cake heaped with her delicious boiled icing.

Beulah’s heart-warming hearty laugh was always a welcome sound. She had many hardships during her long life, outliving her husband and 4 of her 7 adult children.

Her strong faith, generous spirit and strength kept her going. When asked her secret for a long life she said,

”I live for today.”

I hadn’t mean for this to be an eulogy to Aunt Beulah but she was a grand lady, always nicely dressed with hair done and jewelry on.

The day was overcast and rainy - it always seems to be on Halloween.

The Halloween rain gods relented and held off for Beulah’s funeral. It was more a celebration of her life than a funeral. Beulah had touched many lives. This was evident by the many people who showed up to bid her farewell and give condolences to the family.

The gray clouds blanketed the sky. We could see mountains in the distance going to the funeral taking the old highway along the scenic Saint John River in N.B.

In conclusion, I did have a nice birthday dinner and cake the next day after the funeral.

The number of candles on the cake will not be revealed! 🎂 I think there was one for each decade, otherwise there would be a fire.🔥

Happy Birthday to you and I am sorry for your loss. It sounds like she had a grand life and I love her 'live for today' attitude. The overcast mountains must have matched with your mood of the day, but I am glad you celebrated with cake. You made me laugh with your fire comment.
