A Geeky Dad's Movie Guide to Marvel's Inhumans (2017)

in movie-review •  7 years ago  (edited)

Do not pay to see this "movie".

I just wanted to make sure that would show up in the preview to help you avoid wasting your money on this.

Do you see where it says "television series"? They should have stuck to that idea.

Just because I am strongly advising everyone to avoid paying to see Inhumans, it does not mean I completely hated it. In fact, I will most likely watch the television show... but that is just it. This is a television show.

When I heard that ABC/Disney would be premiering a new superhero show via a limited engagement in movie theaters, I was intrigued. I assumed it would be one of those one night only engagements many theaters exhibit on Tuesday nights. When I was looking for the specific Tuesday night, I noticed it was playing all week... in IMAX!

Wow! A televison series debuting in IMAX theaters. That is unique. I figured if the studio went to this trouble to actually try something novel, I should at least give it a shot.

Thanks to my son, our whole family (consisting of my wife, our 12 year old son, our 10 year old daughter and me) are huge Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans. When the show first premiered, my wife and I watched a couple of episodes. Because I thought it looked kind of "cheesy" and I hated two of the main actors (Chloe Bennet and Brett Dalton), we gave up on it after a few episodes. We never thought about it again. Then last summer, my son (who is quickly becoming a marvel completest) discovered it on Netflix and started to watch. My wife and I joined him. We loved it! It had gotten so much better. Eventually my daughter joined in the fun as well.

Because Inhumans is a loose spinoff of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. my son and I decided to fork over the $20 to see it on the big screen.

After reading some bad reviews, I decided it would not be worth the added drive time to see it in true IMAX... so in the name of convenience, we watched it in LieMAX. For once, I'm happy I did.

It was bad that this "movie" was not worth the money. It would have been worse if it cost me an extra hour on the road.

The idea of releasing a television show on IMAX sounded like a great idea. Unfortunately, the execution was horrendous. People pay extra at an IMAX theater for the sights and sounds. We want to see and hear breathtaking action. I assumed that ABC would realize this and make sure this hype generating project would be filled with more action and special effects than a typical television show. I figured it would be special.

I was incredibly wrong.

This was two low budget 42-minute long television shows shot with a special camera and spliced together to make one "movie". There was nothing special about it at all. In fact, if I were watching in my living room, I would have been disappointed with the lack of action. Perhaps they were worried that the special effects would not look good on the huge screen. Well they sure took care of that by making sure there were almost no special effects at all.

They knew people would be paying $10-$15 per ticket for this. They were attracting the most zealous fans. It was incredibly foolish to make the most excited would-be viewers feel cheated and angry.

Luckily, I am not in that category. Thanks to my son, I am annoyed but not angry. He enjoyed it quite a bit... because he is twelve...and it wasn't his money. So I got something for my money. I was able to hang out with my son and enjoy a very unique (if poorly executed) movie experience.

However, I think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much by sitting next to him on our couch and watching it on the small screen.

But what about the "movie"?

This is tough. I want to go on a rant but that would involve way too many spoilers. I don' think people should avoid the show... but no one should pay for this when they can see it for free in three weeks (these 2 episodes will air on ABC on Friday, September 29th).

So without spoiling it too much, here is the good, the bad, and the ugly of Marvel's Inhumans.

The Good

Although... how big do you think the pooper-scooper needs to be?

  • It takes place in the Marvel universe so it is connected to the other shows and movies.
  • It is a loose spinoff of a show my family really enjoys.
  • The Royal family of the Inhumans includes some really fun and cool characters.
  • The king of the Inhumans is super tough and has to communicate via sign language (I think it is important to show this type of diversity).
  • There was a small amount of humor mixed in.
  • My twelve year old son likes it.
  • Lockjaw! (He is a giant teleporting Bulldog... and he is awesome! My son loved him).

The Bad

You think he's about to do something cool right? Nope.

  • Very little action.
  • If you haven't seen Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. you may be confused.
  • Some of the acting is horrendous.
  • Some huge plot holes (one involving surfers.. yes surfers.)
  • It does not work as an 84-minute long movie. I would have been much happier watching this as two 42 minute episodes. There is no way I would "binge watch" this.
  • It is an origin story. Origin stories are always a little too slow for me.
  • There are several scenes that I don't want my ten year old to see (Including a useless sex scene and a case of pretty severe police brutality).
  • The bad guy is actually kind of right (more on this below if you don't mind a spoiler).

The Ugly

Oh no. It's not the actress that belongs in this category. It is that cheap thing on her head. And this is on a small screen. Imagine it in IMAX... on second thought, don't.

  • Medusa's hair. It looks so fake that it is distracting.

Warning Spoiler Below!

The movie centers around a coup lead by, Maximus, the brother of the King of the Inhuman Capital City of Attilan. Maximus is "only human" (he has no powers) and is not treated with the same respect as those who have powers. In fact, all of the Inhumans without superpowers are mistreated. They are forced to live in the bottom dwellings of the palace city and to work in the mines while the Inhumans with powers live in luxury.

So yeah... Maximus is right. He should fight to gain equal treatment for all of the Inhumans. I can already tell this is going to be the biggest problem for me moving forward. It's a superhero story. Keep it simple. The bad guys should be really bad an the good guys should be really good. Do I really want the King to get his power back so he can force the "only humans" to work in mines?

I think the writers made a HUGE mistake here. If they were wise, they would have made Maximus the one responsible for "enslaving" the humans of Attilan.

Ok you can come back now.

Even though the theatrical experience was underwhelming and there are some flaws with the story and acting, I am going to give the television show a chance. Ultimately, for me, this is about sharing something with my son. He can't wait for the show to start. I can't wait to sit next to him and watch it. He's twelve. One day very soon he may not think it is "cool" to watch a show with his dad. So if there is any hope that I will be entertained at all, I am am going to cherish these opportunities.

Hopefully there will be more good than bad and ugly.

very good to know. We haven't even heard of this in Australia yet, or maybe it's just the rock I live under hasn't seen it yet.
Still I should watch Agents of shield, it's on the list of to dos

i love watching agents of shield, now it seems from you description i am gonna hate it. lucky that haven't watched it already

I'd still give the tv show a chance... but don't pay for it.

i will keep that in mind. thanks a lot

I've been wanting to take the kids to just "one last summer blockbuster," and have not been able to find one. Thanks for steering me clear of the wallet drain on this one.

"Wallet Drain" would have been a much better title. Yeah today would be a perfect day for a movie.. but we have seen all the decent ones.

Ever since I saw the trailer for this show I knew right away that Inhumans will suck, but as a huge fan of Marvel characters I will swallow this one too. These kind of shows start slow, but they do get more interesting once we explore the characters and the story after few starting episodes.

That is what I am hoping for. I think Agents of SHIELD picked up steam and got better. I hope this one does too. But it was annoying that they charged money and did nothing special.

I saw the trailer for this and I was thought it looked terrible. Iwan Rheon is a brilliant actor, i loved him in Misfits and he made an excellent villain in GOT. I'm hoping to see him in something more credible soon. Their used to be a time when you didn't expect as much from a TV series as you did a film but with the high production quality of TV shows these days there's really no excuse for this.

You are correct. There really is no excuse. If you are putting it on the big screen and charging money, I think you have a responsibility to your fans to at least try to make something special.

My son and I have watched all of SHIELD, so we will probably watch this. I've not even watched a trailer yet. Will have to see if it is on our free TV channels.

Yes. Definitely see it for free. I was so pleasantly surprised with Agents of SHIELD. I'm glad my son brought me back to it.

The characters in SHIELD developed nicely and it wasn't all about fist fights, which some of the other Marvel series are. I don't watch too much TV, but I'm up for a bit of escapism now and then.

Thank you for letting know that this is garbage , that's a s problem with comics movies and series that you often pay for low quality content, even though story itself might be appealing )

This was definitely a cash grab. It's too bad. Hopefully the show will pick up some steam.

Well, number of times falling asleep - 0, that's saying a lot these days.

It was only 84 minutes long. LOL!

Thanks for the review and helping me make a decision on something I was on the fence about. I also enjoy Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and am looking forward to the Inhumans series, but was similarly intrigued by the IMAX/big screen release thinking they must have had some grand vision/reason to do so. Hearing it's basically underwhelming tells me to wait for it to air in the comfort of my own home.

I really think that is the right call. I do hope you enjoy the show. I am not giving up on it.

Thanks for the share. It has become more difficult to find movies worth the extra drive to the theater and not being able to watch in your PJs.

Thank you for the heads up on this. I to found Agents of Shield hard to get into at first. However I could say the same about most of my other current favorites. Weirdly I find that when I instantly get into something the series tends to fade pretty quickly.

That is a great point! Some of my favorites are ones I stuck with it Ir ones I initially passed on until a friend told me it was a must see.

Possible follow-up؟؟؟

Wow! Thanks, you saved my budget)

Thanks for sharing. Appreciate the candid review as I like saving my ducats for quality films.

I might not want to see this movie @hanshotfirst
I will rather wait for another one without the bad side aspect of what this movie has.
Your reviews are very good.

I really enjoyed this post. I checked oit your LieMax post as well. You are very funny and have great info! I look foward to reading more :) and waiting for this "movie" on Netflix. That wig too though! I love your Geeky Dad Guide.

Thanks!

These tv series are only worth to be watched on the televisions, we must not waste our money in theaters, if they are wanna make it big they should focus on too many things. It is not just enough to put your content on the big screens and expect from the people to watch it. Now we have internet and can share the reviews very easily with each other.

Exactly. Make it worthy of the big screen or just stick to TV.

We are now at the same side of river on this topic. I see you check my posts regularly and upvotes me, thanx fot supporting some new artists like me. The rewards really mean a lot for me to survive here in India. I will be much happy and grateful if you can guide how to get more exposure to my art here.

Thanks for the info, cool review style too ! At least you had some family quality time while at it :D

Thanks. Yeah its always nice hanging out with my kids.

As soon a I herd they were making an inhuman series I knew it was going to be bad. Agents of SHIELD walks the fine line between cheesy and cool, especially the first season. So knowing it was made by the same people...seemed inevitable they would cross that line.
But as a diehard Marvel fan, I will give it a shot.
Thanks for the post;)

I won't lie...That movie poster is pretty cheesy. I can't say that I would've watched it in the first place! haha

The you sir... are much smarter than I. Welcome back!!!

Haha Naah.
Thanks, man!

nice!!! thanks for this, i'm going to skip this, thank you again for the recommendation :)

I'm quite familiar with them because of Marvel's recent push to promote Inhumans in lieu of the X-Men, since they weren't able to get the rights back from Fox. They aren't able to capture that same magic, so I was surprised when they decided to continue the TV project. When I heard it was being held by Scott Buck, who at the time was running the yet to air Iron Fist, I had high hopes. I mean, why would they give one person two high-profile properties if they didn't have faith in him, right?

After the disappointment that was Iron Fist, I just knew Inhumans was going to bomb. It's a shame that they didn't tie it directly to the Inhumans that AoS had already established. Get (the) Buck out, I say! The common thread between two dismal outputs.

I had no idea Buck was involved until after I paid to see it. It suffered from some of the same problems as Iron Fist. Too many boring meetings...

Ugh... I can wait to see that then. I don't know why it is, but Buck has been missing everything ever since the last seasons of Dexter. I had high hopes for him, too. But, with everything, I really wish he would just stay out of comic book properties.

Oh my gosh, I love Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and reading here that you have it on Netflix gives me some small hope that one day, in the very, very far away future, Europe might also get lucky enough to get it on Netflix... I used to download it, but I just can't be bothered to download every show I want to see anymore, so I'm waiting for Netflix releases. Sadly, Europe is so far behind on the US. I'm glad I don't visit sites like 9gag, or I'd know everything that's happened in a show, years before we are allowed to see it.

Anyway, I'd love to give this new show a try, though I'm sure it will take a while again, before Europe gets a fair shot. I'll take your advice and wait for it to hit television or Netflix :-)

@hanshotfirst : Thanks for the review. In fact, I was turned off immediately seeing the trailer, the acting is so weak (can tell from the trailer alone) and the story doesn't seems interesting at all.

hahaha. wait so karnak is an inhuman?

Yep he is. Cool character. Not great on the big screen though.

Nothing can be as bad the Fantastic Four reboot though .WORST Marvel movie made.

Somehow my son has allowed me to escape watching it.

You need to reward your son.

Haha. You know what? The Incredibles is probably one of the best superhero movies to watch as a family.

Even the trailers look a bit goofy.

He enjoyed it quite a bit... because he is twelve...and it wasn't his money. So I got something for my money. I was able to hang out with my son and enjoy a very unique (if poorly executed) movie experience.

Perfect response.
We're trying to get an exclusive interview with the pup. If you know anyone who might be able to catch up with him, let us know.

Thanks for the review, you saved my time and money.

Thanks for the info.

True, there's a huge difference between television direction and big screen direction. This idea is unique but I'm too not very comfortable with it

Are there at least some hot woman to look at? :D

This tv series. Good on watch on television. also is worth watching in the cinema. if they want to make it big. they need to focus more. Now we have internet. And can share the review very easily with each other. Now it's all modern.
Good for you

Have not watched it yet and thanks for the share. :D

I watched the thriller and it looks like a good movie, I'll watch this weekend. I liked it and music too, did you know who did this song @hanshotfirst

Thanks @hanshotfirst.

As a big fan of Marvels A.O.S myself, I would watch this movie.
I don't exactly like the Avengers movie but I'm a TV series buff.
I think these are very important factors for a Dad movie review (haha):

Number of times I fell asleep: 0
Number of eye rolls: 5
Number of face palms: 3

I took my kids to the movies to watch Despicable Me 3 and I look forward to them growing older so we can watch more movies together. :)
They are only 4 and 6 so the scenarios are either they make too much noise, have a tantrum, want to leave in the middle or fall asleep (which is a long shot).

Nice frent

I haven't watched any of the tv series that either #Marvel or #DC have recently released... there's such a huge influx of shows following the success of the Hollywood blockbusters that it's become overkill... I do, however, enjoy the animated features that each universe has been putting out (DC I'd actually faring better than Marvel in this area, though I tend to prefer the latter' characters and storylines)... what my daughters and I have begun to do in the past couple years is spend time at the many comic book stores in and around NYC, selecting graphic novels to read rather than simply flipping the tube on... I'm sure that one of these days we'll play catch up with a marathon binge session (or two)...

great post...

Thanks for the heads up! I enjoy Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But haven't caught up with the latest episodes yet.

Best move was X-ing out the idea releasing it in theatres... Addition by Subtraction. I beared down and watched the TV show, which was horrible. At least Black Bolt comic book is excellent. But the damage to the Inhuman reputation may have been done!
